I have recently purchased a Nest thermostat and am hence to new to the functionalities. It's started snowing here in Canada, and the thermostat has been working quite well. However, I am going away on a 45-day vacation in the first week of December, would return mid-January. I would like to minimize my heating bills during this away period, but what is even more important to me is that I return to a comfortable temperature when I get back home after my vacation. What would you suggest I do to achieve both these objectives? And would you please walk me through the steps that I need to take?

Hi Palamon,
Thanks for reaching out. A few questions: what type of Nest Thermostat do you have? In what country are you located? Nest Thermostats have features like Home/Away Assist and Early-On that you can use to save energy and return to a comfortable temperature when you get back home from a vacation.
With Home/Away Assist you don’t have to manually switch all your Nest products on or off, or rely on a set schedule. For instance, when you leave your home, Home/Away Assist can turn down your heating to save energy.
Early-On works similarly to when you have to preheat the oven to make cookies. You typically start to heat your oven a few minutes ahead of time so it’s the right temperature when you’re ready to bake your batch of cookies.
