Nest Thermostat

Ritchie
Community Member

Hi. I have a nest learning thermostat, and used to be able to control it with voice commands through nest mini speakers, or the Google assistant. Since migrating the account, I can only control the thermostat through the nest app, which isn't always convenient. Is it possible to completely delete the thermostat from the account, and then delete the account, and start again from "new" as it were? I tried to link the thermostat to my Google Home app, as suggested by Google help, but the process is stopped once I get to the serial number stage, there is no option to type in a serial number. Any ideas please? TIA, Ritchie.

Try these steps:

  1. Force close both the Nest app and Home app.
    • Android: Swipe up from the bottom, hold, then let go. Swipe up on the app.
    • iPhone/iPad: Swipe up from the bottom, hold, then let go. Swipe up on the app. On older devices with a home button, double-click the Home button, then swipe up on the app.
  2. Re-open the Home app.
  3. Check if the device is listed under a room name or under "local devices."

If you still can't see the device try these steps:

  1. Create a new "home" in the Home app.
    • At the top left, tap the + icon.
    • Tap Create new home.
    • Follow the steps.
  2. Check if you can see the new "home" in the Nest app.
    • At the top left, tap the menu icon.
    • At the top right, tap the + icon > Continue > Select the home > Continue.
    • Follow the steps.

This should cause a sync to occur and your device may now appear in the Home app. If you still can't see the device, I would recommend resetting it, and setting it up in the new "home" you just created which you can see in both apps. To do that:

  1. Reset your thermostat to defaults.
  2. Remove your thermostat from the Nest app.
  3. Add your Nest thermostat back to the Nest app. Make sure you select the new home in the app that you created during setup.

Hi all, thanks for your replies, and sorry for the slow response. Tried those variables, and still no joy. The newly added home in the Home app still doesn't find/see the force closed/factory reset Nest thermostat.

Hello Ritchie,

Thanks for getting back to us, and I appreciate you taking the steps. To confirm, could you please check your thermostat's Nest App status in its settings? Let me know if it shows connected to an account or if it's giving you options to add in the app.

Keep me posted.

Mark

Not sure how to check the the thermostats nest app status in settings, but I do know I can't log into the nest app as it was migrated.

Hey Ritchie,

Thanks for getting back to us. You can go to your Nest Thermostat device Quick View menu, then highlight and select the gear icon for Settings. After that, turn the ring until you find an option for the Nest app, let me know what you'll see there. That will be the status of your thermostat Nest app.

Thanks,

Jenelyn

Ok, that says "Connected"

Hi Ritchie,

Thanks for keeping me in the loop. Before we proceed, I want to confirm if your Nest Thermostat is still not visible on the app. If so, we can reset your thermostat Account Connection for you to add it again to the app.

Best,
Jenelyn

The nest thermostat is now in the Home App, and wasn't before. I just tried to change the temperature using Google Voice assistant, but the response is "Sorry it looks like the thermostat hasn't been set up yet, you can do that in assistant settings" which I have also tried and failed.

Hi there,

Can you properly use your Nest Thermostat in the Google Home app? I'm trying to see if it's something to do with your Google Assistant. Do you see any messages or code on the Google Home app after selecting your thermostat there?

Thanks,

Jenelyn

Yes, the Home app can control the thermostat now, like the Nest app can. Just Google Assistant that doesn't recognise the Thermostat.

Hi Ritchie,

Thanks for the confirmation. Could you please take a screenshot of your Google Home app showing where your thermostat is connected?

I just downloaded the Google Assistant app, even though my Pixel 7 Pro seemed to have that functionality already built in. Opened a few menus, changed a few settings, now the Nest Thermostat works using voice commands on Phone and on Google Home mini speaker. Seems to be all working fine as I originally hoped for.

👍🏻👍🏻 I hope this thread helps others, as it was really frustrating when something that should simply work, just didn't. Thanks for all the help and advice everyone 😎😎
