Nest Thermostat

I purchased the NEST Thermostat when we purchased a new furnace, air conditioner, and duct system for our home. Initially, we decided to have it programmed on the ECO m.ode and we were initially pleased with the performance.

We are away from our home for about six months every year and like the option of controlling our heating and air conditioning remotely.

We came back home this October and have been constantly having issues with keeping our home warm! The heater does not come on until after 2:00 pm, which has been very disappointing!

I went to HomeDepot and purchased a $25 regular thermostat and found that it only uses 4  wires and my system has 5. We hired a professional HVAC technician, who stated that the NEST thermostat was superior and we should reprogram it, and paid him $160.00 to try to fix the problem and do the yearly maintenance cleaning and service. He had similar problems controlling the temperature through the HOME app and finally installed the NEST app on my phone. It seemed to fix the problem for about a week. Today the issues have resurfaced and I don't have any control of the temperature! This morning the temperature was in the low 60's and because I was up before 6:00 decided to adjust the thermosat to 70 degrees unsuccessfully. I tried resetting the thermostat several times and  switched it to HEAT/AIR and OFF several times with no heating! It is 11:25am and my home is still cold! I am ready to give up on this thermostat and contacted HomeDepot for purchasing a new one. Before I do this, I would like to take this one to one of your service centers for checking it for defects before I make another purchase. Please let me know what I can do at this point. Thank you,

Guillermo Sanchez

Hi MemoSanchez,

Uh-oh! I'm sorry to hear about the issues you're experiencing with your Nest Thermostat. Let me take a look at this for you. A few questions:

  • Are you located in North America or Europe?
  • What type of Nest Thermostat do you have?
  • Is the Nest Thermostat newly installed?
  • Did you use the Compatibility Checker tool to confirm the thermostat's compatibility.
  • Does the thermostat screen indicate that it’s actively calling for heating?
  • What type of furnace do you have? (gas, electric, etc.)
  • When did heating last work?
  • Did heating ever work with the Nest thermostat?
  • Did the heating work with the previous thermostat?
  • Did you turn off the power to the HVAC system?
  • Did you recently turn off any breakers?
  • Have you recently experienced a brownout or blackout?
  • Is there a light switch near the heater that controls an outlet?
  • Did you select the correct fuel type?
  • Do the LED lights blink on the HVAC control board? If yes, locate the light.
  • When was the last time you changed the furnace's air filter?
  • Have you experienced extremely cold weather lately?
  • Is this the first notable temperature drop of the year in the area?

i'll look forward to your response.

Best,

Zoe

I am in N America. Horizon City, Texas, specifically. I have a NEST thermostat. It was installed three years ago. I  don't know what a Compatability Checker is, as the professional HVAC contractor did the installation. Yes, it is set on Heating and also tried on the Heating/AC mode. We have a gas furnace, which was also installed brand new along with the thermostat, ducts and air conditioning. The Heating works, but not when I ask it to. The Heating worked with the previous thermostat. No, I did not turn the power off. No, I  did not turn off the breakers. There was a recent blackout in our area last week. No light switch near the heater that controls the outlet. I have not selected any fuel type. I have not seen the HVAC control board. The filter was changed last week by a professional during his resetting of the thermostat, maintenance and inspection of the system. We have experienced cold weather this winter, but not extreme. Other parts of the US had extreme cold. We recently had the first notable drop in temperature in the area

Hi there,

Thanks for getting back to us. Could you list down the power readings of your thermostat's VIN, IIN, PS-* under  Settings > Equipment > Power Info? Also, send us a photo of your Nest Thermostat wiring configuration so I can take a closer look.

Thanks,

Zoe

This is so frustrating! The heating system worked fine for a few days as we set it at 70 and left it undisturbed. (We didn't lower the temperature even at night, when 70 may have been a bit too warm.) But last night the weather got down to low 30 and our crazy thermostat started acting up! It allowed the indoor temperature to go down to 64, which was too low for our comfort in the morning! I was up at 5am and tried to raise the temp to 70 unsuccessfully. The thermostat only showed that it would be 2+ hours. Right now it is 8am and still no heat! This is ridiculous!

Hello MemoSanchez,

I'm sorry for the late reply. Follow these:

  1. Move the W1 wire to the Y1 terminal.
    • At the breaker box, turn off the power to the HVAC system.
    • Move the W1 wire to the Y1 terminal then put the display back on the wall.
    • Turn the power back on at the breaker box.
    • Switch to cool mode but expect heat.
    • Check if the system runs. Some systems take time to start up so allow 5 minutes for the heat to turn on.

Let us know how it goes.

Regards,

Zoe
