This is a fun observation, but also a tiny bug report.
We can 'earn' leaves based on energy usage - or rather lack thereof. But I seem to have beaten the system. Why and how?
I use my furnace sparingly and likely have it way colder inside than most would accept. As a result, my furnace runs relatively few hours per heating season (150-250 hrs per season (I have tracked it monthly for the past 20+ years).
I 'earn' a leaf when furnace is running 'minimally', but those days when it is not running at all, there are no leaves 'earned'. It's a funny observation, and I don' really care, but clearly a bug somewhere.
The two weeks in the shift March/April furnace ran a total of less than an hour, and 12 days in that period it did not run at all. Yet not a single leaf earned. My neighbors probably in the same period ran their furnaces 40 hours if not more (and I would call that perfectly 'normal' usage)
Google/Nest knows:
So it should be an easy fix the algorithm to reflect 'earnings' when furnace is not running - but it would under normal circumstances 😊

Hi Wellcraft19,
Thanks for bringing this up here in the Community. To know more about this issue, I'd like to confirm, do you have a zoned system? Are you enrolled in any seasonal savings programs? During the first few days after you install your thermostat, the Leaf will appear based on pre-set temperatures. After that, Nest will personalize the Leaf to your home and temperature schedule:
The Leaf will always appear when your thermostat is set to the following temperatures:
Your thermostat changes the criteria for earning a Leaf based on what it has learned, this is to encourage you to save more over time. For example, if you set your thermostat to heat your home to 69°F/20.5°C you might see a Leaf the first few times. But eventually, you may need to set the temperature to 67°F/19.5°C to earn a Leaf. Hit this link for more information.
Best,
Emerson

Hello Wellcraft19,
I'm dropping by to ensure that everything is covered here. How's it going with your Nest Thermostat? Were you able to read the information and check the link I've shared? In case you have an update, you know where to find us.
Regards,
Emerson

Hey Wellcraft19,
Just one final check in here since activity has slowed down. We'll be locking the thread in the next 24 hours, but if you still need help, we would be happy to keep it open. If there's more we can do, just let us know.
Thanks,
