Nest app on Android phone doesn't reliably activate heat

I've been having this problem on and off for years. When I want to turn on my heat remotely from the app, I can make all the changes I want but it never turns orange indicating the heat is on. Most of the time it works fine except when I really really need to use it. I have to start turning on fan and airwave and all this stuff until it'll wake up. Sometimes it doesn't work at all. I know I'm communicating with the thermostat it just doesn't want to work. I've been having lots of problems with this thermostat for years but this one really takes the cake.

I understand that your Nest thermostat intermittently fails to activate heating remotely via the app, and you have to start turning on the fan and air-wave and all this stuff until it wakes up, but sometimes it doesn't work and I apologize for any inconvenience caused. • Is the app up to date even the Nest thermostat? 
• What kind of HVAC system do you have?" (Heat pump, conventional system, etc.)
• When did the inconvenience start? 
• What troubleshooting have you done so far? 
• To help us get a better picture of what's happening, do you mind sharing a photo of the wiring for your Nest thermostat?
