Nest app wont complete setup for my account, but will for others

Thermostat is successfully connected to my friend's Nest account (she has a Nest set up in her home.) However, I cannot complete the setup process for the app on my Android phone. I get as far as entering the 6 character code identifying the Nest, but it just spins on the next page where I believe I am supposed to find the 4 character code that is displayed on the device. Same issue occurs if I use the qrcode path. I was able to connect to the device via her account after she invited me to join her Family account. However, this is not a long term solution, I need to understand how to connect through my own account.

Nest Thermostat
For the Nest Thermostat model, use the Google Home app. The QR code and setup key are physically printed on the back of the thermostat. Follow these steps:

Nest Thermostat E and Nest Learning Thermostat
For Nest Thermostat E and Nest Learning Thermostat models, use the Nest app. The QR code and setup key are in the settings on the thermostat itself and are not printed on the device. Follow these steps:

If the thermostat is currently linked to your friend's account, you will need to factory reset it first.
