So, after the previous conversation on the lack of choices for covers for the nest e heatlink, I purchased a spare heatling on ebay for £20, with the idea that I would experiment on the cover using 3M 1080 wrap (I think the stuff that cars are wrapped in). The photos below show the process in wrapping this, from removing the existing wrap to the finished product. The finished product
Inside, trimmed of with adhesive ring reapplied

Before trimming, did consider leaving it like this
Not the prettiest match for the lightswitch
inside after covering, before trimming
film applied
with the fabric removed - doesn't actuall y look to bad uncovered
all fabric removed

A few more comments for feedback
1. As an alternative to the film cover, I did consider that it would be an option to cover with white fabric.
2. Another alternative, probably the quickest option, would be to spray it (primer followed by white matt)
3. From the photo, you can see how big the heatlink is compared to the light switch next to it - this switch is linked to wifi, has led indicators and is much neater, I can't see any reason why the heatling has to be so large, especially as it wastes the space in the box behind the heatling where the thermostat was before. At worst, the heatlink could be made reversible, so it can either have components which fit into the wiring box and has a thin cover, or if it needs to be surface mounted, then it's mounted the other way around with a larger cover to hide the components.
4. I question why the heatlink really needs to be separate to the thermostat. If it wasn't for the fact that I like the app to control the thermostats (I will have mutliple units), and it was easy to fit myself, I'd have been looking at something like the Hive mini, which is a much more modern design overall.
Hopefully, some of this will get back to Nest for them to consider in future, but hopefully soon the option to buy different covers will be sooner rather than later.
