Nest running in off position

Just recently our nest thermostats started to run in the off position. Every now and then is just blowing a burst of cold air. It’s currently December and we are in NYS. We tend to like it cold so we don’t want the heat on so we’ve shut the system OFF but it continues to blow every few minutes for maybe a minute at a time. Why would this be.

AC and thermostat are almost 2 years old.

Hello AlchemyHouse,

I'm sorry to hear about the issue you're experiencing with your Nest Thermostat and HVAC system. It can be quite frustrating when your thermostat doesn't behave as expected, especially during the cold months. There are several potential reasons for your thermostat to continue blowing cold air even when the system is turned off.

  1. Check the fan settings on your thermostat. There might be a setting that keeps the fan running even when the heating or cooling is turned off. Adjusting the fan settings to "Auto" instead of "On" might solve the issue.
  2. Check the target temperature. The unexpected heating or cooling may have been the result of someone changing the target temperature without realizing it.
  3. Check whether the thermostat is set to automatically adjust temperatures when home members leave and come home (for example, switching to Eco temperatures when the home is set to Away).
  4. Check whether Auto-Schedule is enabled on the thermostat. Auto-Schedule lets the thermostat learn from manual changes to the temperature and make automatic adjustments to the temperature schedule.
  5. Inspect the wiring connecting the thermostat to your HVAC system. Loose or faulty wiring could be causing the thermostat to send incorrect signals to the system, resulting in intermittent bursts of cold air.
  6. It's also possible that there's an issue with your HVAC system itself. There might be a malfunction in the blower motor or a problem with the system's control board. It would be advisable to have a professional HVAC technician inspect your system to identify and fix any underlying issues.

Let us know how it goes.

Best regards,
Mark
