I think Nest software should have more robust usage of the fan-only mode and temperature forecasts. I think like most homes, when the outside temp is over 90 F, the AC is only powerful enough to maintain the house temperature, not reduce it. I've been using the eco friendly setting for the AC at 76 F and that temp is fine for most days, except when the day is expected to be over 90 F.
When I'm home on 90+ weekends, I turn the fan on around 10 or 11 a.m. to prep for the heat that's coming. As the temp goes up, I turn the AC on around 73 F (cooler than the normally scheduled temp) and it's able to keep the house close to 76 F at the peak in late afternoon. When I'm at work and I don't do this, once the house is 76 F, it's quickly on it's way to 84+ and the AC struggles to slow the runaway temperature rise. I come home to a scorching house and have paid for AC all day. Not smart.
Nest knows the expected temperature for the day. When it knows it's going to be a 100 F day, why can't it be programmed to turn the fan on at, say 70 F, and then turn on the AC at, say 73 F (or X degrees cooler than normal)? It would give the AC a fighting chance, use less energy and allow for an actually comfortable house temperature.
I'm smart enough to do this manually. Nest programming should smart enough do it automatically.
