The wide actual room temp to set-point temperature differential that's coded into the NEST firmware causes it to wait a long time before it turns on the heat --- ostensibly to "preserve your furnace equipment" by cycling it fewer times per day, and to save on natural gas.   Problem is, the NEST fails at it's primary mission:  to keep the house comfortable.

You are asking a question that dozens of folks on this forum are asking.  Google needs to add a setting that permits users to set a smaller value in the temperature change required to turn on the heat!

My actual temperature seems to fall as many as 3 degrees below target before heat turn on. I don’t understand why the differential I experience is so large.

Hi Jake. I still experience up to four degrees of cooling below my desired temperature before Nest sends a heating signal to my furnace. It’s inconsistent. Maybe I’m doing something wrong. I don’t know. But, I am unhappy with this situation, and uncomfortable. A $200 thermostat should perform better than what I experience.

I think I may have solved my problem. Nest Thermometer was using some type of activity sensor in the unit to set the unit to Away while the house was occupied. When I noticed the house being uncomfortably cold, I would approach the unit, it would sense my presence, and set the unit to occupied, thus turning on the heat. I’m not certain this solved the problem. I’m hopeful.

Can you answer this question for me? If my preferred temperature is set at 70, how far will the temperature drop before the thermostat calls for heat if the unit is set not to away but to home? 69? 68? 67? 66? Lower?

Thank you.

Hey Dan2,

I would be happy to help out and ensure the device is working properly for you. Nest thermostat's use presence sensing to detect when someone is home to manage your home & away routines. Home & away routines can adjust your Nest thermostats to the right temperatures when the last person leaves and the first person returns.

I would recommend reviewing the articles above, as they provide more details on that. Please let me know if that helps, or if you have any questions from here.

Best regards,

Jake

I think I’m okay. I think the  issue was the Nest sensor that was setting my status to away based on activity. Once I turned it off I have not had any problems with large temperature swings.
