Nest thermostat compatibility

I have a forced air system with natural gas heat and electric AC (with heat pump). I have 2 zones, however I am trying to replace only the main zone.
I tried to connect the Nest Learning thermostat but ended up with AC only. Even when I tested the heat, only AC would come on.
Top pic is the current thermostat.
bottom pick is the system panel. Zone 2 in the pic is the main zone which I am trying to connect the nest thermostat to. There is also an extra brown wire which I connected to C and powered up the Nest (when I tried to connect the Nest).

Hello Lazri,

Thanks for reaching out! It sounds like you're facing some challenges with integrating the Nest Learning Thermostat into your main heating zone. Let's troubleshoot and try to find a solution.

Firstly, it's great that you've identified Zone 2 as the main zone for your heating system. When connecting the Nest Thermostat, ensuring the wiring is correct is crucial. Since you mentioned connecting the extra brown wire to the C terminal, that's a step in the right direction. Here are a few additional steps you might want to consider:

  1. Double-check the wiring at both the thermostat and the system panel. Ensure that each wire is connected to the correct terminal. Also, confirm that the Nest Thermostat supports the type of system you have (forced air with natural gas heat and electric AC with a heat pump).
  2. Turn off the power to your heating and cooling system, wait for a few minutes, and then turn it back on. This can sometimes reset the system and allow the Nest Thermostat to detect the correct settings.
  3. Can you post a picture of your Nest Thermostat's wiring setup?

Let us know how it goes.

Regards,
Mark

Hey there,

I appreciate the picture. Have you managed to check your thermostat's orientation? If you haven't yet, please give these steps a whirl:

  1. On your thermostat, go to the Settings Nest settings icon.
  2. Select Equipment > Select Continue and then Continue.
  3. Select Heat pump.
  4. The Nest Thermostat defaults to an O setting for heat pumps.
    1. If the O option is highlighted, select B.
    2. If the B option is highlighted, select O.
  5. To make sure that the issue is resolved, test your heating and cooling again.

Keep me posted if that helps.

Thanks,
Mark

Thank you, Mark. I have tried different combinations, but at times I get heat only, and other times AC only.

I plan to hire a specialist for the installation, but wanted to make sure that the Learning Nest is compatible with the system I have. Would you know?

Thanks again.

Hi Lazri,

I'm sorry for the late response—you're welcome! I understand your concern. The Nest Learning Thermostat is designed to work with a variety of HVAC systems, but to ensure compatibility, I recommend checking the system specifications or reaching out to the manufacturer. The HVAC technician can also assess your setup for a seamless installation. Feel free to ask if you have any more questions.

Thanks,
Mark
