Nest thermostat don't turn on with fully charged batteries

pelicano

Hey there,

I recently bought a Google Nest thermostat, but it's not working properly. It won't turn on with batteries, even when they're fully charged. However, when I remove the batteries and connect it to the wall dock, it turns on and displays an error message with the URL g.co/nest/m19. I followed the instructions in the guide, but it still won't work. I tested the batteries and tried with new ones, but no luck. Sometimes, when I touch the sides, the screen briefly turns on and then goes off again. Can anyone help me out? Thanks in advance!

Hi pelicano,

I'm sorry to hear about the situation. Please make sure to check if the Nest Thermostat batteries are seated properly.

  1. Pull the thermostat display off the base.
  2. Make sure you’ve completely removed the battery tab. Pull out the batteries from the back of the thermostat display and check that there aren’t any pieces of battery tab left.
  3. Put the batteries back in and make sure they are fully seated and facing the right way.
  4. Push the thermostat display back onto the base until it clicks into place.
  5. If the low battery message doesn’t go away, replace the batteries with high-quality 1.5 V AAA alkaline batteries from a known manufacturer.

Also, can you help me with what type of batteries you use to replace the Nest Thermostat?

I'll look forward to your response.

Thanks,
Zoe

Hi  zoeuvre,

I already did those steps without luck.  I tested several brands, Energizer, Duracell all alkaline batteries. I bought also battery testers and they are full of energy.  So the problem is not in the batteries. It is in the nest thermostat that is leading with a odd behavior when the batteries are on.

Because when there are not batteries but are getting the energy from the wires C & R it turns on and after some welcome messages in different languages it ends showing the m19 message.  But if I put the batteries then the display stay off. So the batteries are really detected given the behavior change when it uses batteries but it can go further the initialization.

I bought this device more than a year ago and I recently opened when in finished the house refactoring I'm not able to sent it back to the store (amazon).  So I would like to know if there is a way to reset the device in some way or if there is a way to bypass the m19 message to make it works.

Hello folks,

I wanted to stop by and see how I could help.

Thanks for the steps, Zoe.

@pelicano, I appreciate all the steps you've taken. I'd love to know more about this.

Could you please share with us photos of your previous and current thermostat's wiring? This is to check on how it was being labeled.

Regards,

Mark

Hi pelicano,

I'm checking back in — how's it going? Still need our help?

Regards,

Mark

Hi All, thanks Mark for the answer.

There wasn't a previous thermostat so I can't take a photo of the wires, I can take a photo of the current wires which are C, R. W1 if it helps.

But I believe we are shifting the focus from the main problem.  Why the thermostat is not turning on only with Batteries?

Also, I have a doubt, if you can help to resolve it, we can discard the wires connectivity doubts.

If the thermostat plugged in without batteries and it is receiving the right power from the wires,  should the thermostat turn on and allow it to configure or the expected behavior is to show the message m19 and stuck there?

if the expected behavior is to get blocked in the m19 messages until batteries are added. So the problem is reduced to my first question.

Why the thermostat is not turning on only with batteries (without being docked to the wall)?

Hey there,

Gotcha! To confirm, are you still using the same batteries included in the box? If so, on the back of the thermostat display, please make sure to pull out the clear battery tab.

Keep me posted.

Best regards,
Mark

Hi Markjosephp,

Yes, I already checked and changed the batteries with new ones.  Also, I bought a battery tester to check batteries and all of them are giving an output of 1.5 on average.

An indicator that the thermostat detects the batteries is when I add the batteries and dock the thermostat doesn't turn on. But if I remove the batteries and dock the thermostat, it turns on shows a welcome message in different languages, and then shows the m19 warning.

Also if I pay attention to the thermostat when is docked and with batteries that almost imperceptible flash on the screen shown like resetting it self the screen or something?

So my guess is this device is failing to boot with batteries for some reason.  Therefore one of my first question was if there is a way to bypass the m19 message with the hope that configuring the device on the dock I will be able to update it and then I can try again adding the batteries suspicion of some bug.

Hi there,

Great troubleshooting so far, @pelicano. Could you please try to reseat all the wires? Make sure that all wires are properly connected and the tabs are pushed down. Also, turn off the power from your HVAC system at the breaker box before touching the wires.

Let me know if that helps.

Regards,

Mark

Hey there,

Giving this a friendly bump. Have you managed to reseat all your thermostat wires? I'd be glad to hear from you — I'd like to make sure everything is working.

Best,
Mark
