Nest thermostat - hot water (and general programming) REQUEST DEVS

I am really hoping this goes somewhere and devs do pay attention to these forums. We recently bought a nest thermostat with the hope of saving some money with the increase in energy prices. Far from saving it has double our daily consumption simply due to the limitations of the devices programming.

Why can I not set a time for hot water below 30 minutes? and only in 30 minute increments? My pervious programmer was over a decade old and I could set a complex programme down to the minute! What is stopping you here?

We have a small house and a small boiler and having it heating for 30 minutes is a waste of energy. LIterally double the pervious setting of 15 mins which gave us enough water for the day.

I have seen this issue raised before - so please please can you simply change the software to allow actual full control of the system!?

Hi MalleusMal,

Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your inquiry. I'd love to know more about this.

Could you please tell us what type of Nest Thermostat you have? Also, from what country are you posting?

I'll look forward to your response.

Regards,
Mark

It's the third gen nest learning thermostat. I'm in the UK.

Thank you for the information @MalleusMal. The 30 minute time was chosen to prevent short cycling water tanks as generally they take quite some time to heat up. However, keep in mind that most water tanks also have a thermostat on them, to set the water temperature in that tank. If that temperature is reached, regardless of the hot water schedule, the water heating should stop, even if you have the schedule on.

We're always looking for ways to improve both our products and our softwatare and I want to thank you for your interest in the thermostat and the feedback provided.

Any change will depend on my colleagues from engineering and software so I can't give you any promise but should there be any update, we'll make sure to let everyone know on our official channels.

Thanks, but what if I want to short cycle? I don't understand why this would have less customisability than a 20 year old programmer? And yes the cylinder should stop requesting heat, but what if it doesn't? Mine doesn't, I don't know why. It's an extra thing to troubleshoot. But would be much easier if I was simply given the choice. It seems the risk of short cycling can easily be addressed, but this issue cannot with the current system.

Hi there. As my colleague mentioned, any change will depend on my colleagues from engineering and software so I can't give you any promise, but if you want to boost the hot water for a shorter period of time, you can stop the boost at any moment from the app or from the thermostat itself. In this situation, you can boost it for less than 30 minutes if you want to.

Thanks, Larisa.

Hi, I just wanted to check in. Is there anything else I can perhaps try and assist with at the moment?
