Nest thermostat keeps turning off

Brens76
Community Member

My nest thermostat has worked fine for over a year now.  Just in the last 3 days now I has started shutting off (going into Away mode) while I am still at home.  I only notice because it starts getting really cold and when I go check the thermostat will be in away eco mode.  This is horrible at night. The last two nights I wake up freezing the temp is 58 degrees and the dang thermostat is I. Away mode.  I check the History and it only says. “No Presence Detected”.    Why all of a sudden has it started doing this?  I made no changes to the setting or anything.   It’s middle of winter time and it’s freezing me out.  Please help.

A quick temporary work-around is to turn off Home/Away Assist in the Nest settings.  Personally, I found the whole Home/Away presence sensing to be so unreliable, I turned it off and haven't looked back.

My nest stopped working. Electrician came out and changed burnt wire and breaker. Nest keeps saying “thermostat shutting down” and goes blank. Then shows a google logo. I don’t know what’s going on!

Any update on this? Seemingly same issue over here..

I’m still having this issue. It just going into Away status and into Eco Mode multiple times during the day while I’m home. And the worst is at night while I’m sleeping.  I don’t understand why it thinks I am away it’s suppose to be using my phone location to detect where I’m at and clearly it is not. But no one seems to know how to fix this.  Even turning off the home/away assist does nothing.  Im very frustrated and about to replace with another brand.  I don’t know what else to do at this  point.

Hey folks,

Thanks for reaching out and we're sorry for the delay.

I'd like to further investigate what's happening by checking a couple of things. @Brens76, did you set any temperature schedule? Do you have a common wire connected at the base?

@Susiev123, which Nest thermostat are you using? Could you share a photo of your current wiring configurations?

I hope to hear from you soon.

Best regards,

Ryan

Still an issue for me.  Only way I can figure out how to work around it is to change my default “eco mode” temps.  So during winter I set my eco mode temp to 65 so when it kicks off and eco mode come on I don’t wake up in the middle of the night freezing when temp drops into 50s.   This to me is not a fix. But what I had to do because it’s not working.

Yes I have a schedule set everyday of the week. It’s the same.   H by it even with the schedule on. It still just shuts off and goes into “away mode” when I’m home.  Mostly at night when I’m sleeping.   But will also do this during the day if I don’t walk by the thermostat often.  I thought it was suppose to use my phones “location” to know if I was home or away.  I have checked my phone location setting are on and set to always allow

Hi Ryan, when my air conditioner is on before it reaches the correct temp it turns off with a knocking sound. When I go to the nest thermostat, it turns the air conditioner back on without the knocking sound. It’s almost as if since I’m walking near the thermostat something jigggles inside the thermostat and it turns back on the air conditioner.

Ryan,

my thermostat is new and keeps turning off when no one is at home. How can I stop that?

We have an issue where every day mid-day it turns off the air conditioner and just turns the fan. It is HOT, and we can’t it to be cooler in here! We have looked to make sure all of the automatic settings are off and turned off everything we can see on! We have to turn off the thermostat and wait a few mins mid day and then turn it back on! This sucks when it is 90 degrees out!

Hello.  I have tried turning off the Home/Away Assist mode, but that did not resolve it either it still turns itself off and goes into Eco mode.  So only work around I could figure out was to change my eco mode temp from the default temp to a higher temp like 68 degrees so when it goes into eco mode while I sleep I do not wake up freezing when the temp drops to the 50’s.  I don’t know what else to do.  And not sure why all of a sudden it just started doing this.

Having the same issue w/ AC shutting off before it reaches correct temp …. I don’t see a single place in this thread where u address any of these issue or give any advice for a fix ??

We ended up replacing the Nest to see if it was our air conditioner or the Nest, it turned out it was the Nest!  Our air conditioner is just fine!
