Hello Josh,

Is there an update to this? Do the new Gen 4 support variable-speed heat pumps and variable-speed fan/blowers?

Thanks

Hi @boettcht,

Thanks for posting here in the community. I understand your concern if Nest Thermostat 4Gen supports variable-speed heat pumps and variable-speed fan/blowers. I'm happy to help!

At this moment, you cannot control variable speeds on the thermostat side. If the equipment can modulate itself with a non-proprietary 24VAC input, then the Nest Learning Thermostat will work, but will require adjustments to settings to ensure efficient operation of the equipment.

Keep me posted.

Best regards,
Melany

After all of these years, it's too bad that the Gen 4, didn't come up with a solution for this. Variable speed, air handlers and heat pumps are just going to become more and more popular. It's disappointing that you have to throw away your Nest thermostat and replace it with the proprietary one that comes with and can't talk to the heat pump or air handler. 😞

It's now up for pre order but still unsure if they have add anything to make the new 4th gen work with variable-speed air handlers and heat pumps.
