Nest thermostat taking 2+ hours to cool one or two degrees!

JMango

Hi.   I’ve had two nest thermostats for a couple years - one for upstairs and one for downstairs.  I have schedules programmed for each.  Up until recently the downstairs thermostat was cooling ok.  But now it is taking forever - as in hours - to cool one or two degrees. It doesn’t matter what time of day, what temperature, etc - but as an example moving it to cool from 80 to 79 or 78 takes hours, whereas my upstairs thermostat cools it within 10-15 mins.  The display on the “faulty” one says 2+ hours.

I’ve had the ac techs come and my ac is serviced regularly. They said it’s not the ac units but the thermostat creating issues.

help!!!

Hi JMango,

Thanks for reaching out and for being a step ahead of us. I'm sorry for the delay. I'd like to check it further. Please provide your Nest Thermostat power readout.

You can follow the guide below:

Nest Learning Thermostat and Nest Thermostat E:

  1. Go to your thermostat Quick View menu.
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Look for Technical Info.
  4. Select Power.

Nest Thermostat 2020:

  1. Open the Google Home app and then tap the thermostat and then tap Settings .
  2. Select the Device Information.
  3. Choose Technical Information.

Also, please check your thermostat Energy History. It might help you see what your thermostat was doing previously. You can visit this support article on how to check Energy History in the thermostat or in the Nest app.

Best,

Jenelyn

Hi Nanlzto6,

Thanks for reaching out. A few questions: what type of Nest Thermostat do you have? Also, what is your outdoor temperature? Do you see any codes or messages on your thermostat or in the app? Provide your thermostat's power readouts. Also, check your thermostat's Energy History.

Regards,

Jenelyn

I have a nest 3 learning, outside temp is 85, no codes or messages. I have no idea how to do any of the the other things you asked.  Last night I turned the nest off for 10 minutes and when I did the cold air came on but took over 3 hours to go from 79 to 76 degrees.  I did this after I read that could help.

Hi everyone,

@Nanlzto6, I wanted to ensure that everything was covered here. Let's see what's going on. Gather the power reading of your Nest Thermostat.

For the Nest Learning Thermostat and Nest Thermostat E:

  1. Press the thermostat ring to bring up the Quick View menu.
  2. Turn the ring to Settings and press to select.
  3. Turn the ring to Technical Info and press to select.

For the Nest Thermostat 2020:

  1. Tap the touch bar to bring up the Menu view.
  2. Slide your finger down to Settings, then tap to select.
  3. Slide your finger to Equipment > Power Info.

Also, since you’re not getting any kind of code or message, I listed things to check on your HVAC system if the air coming out of your vents is not as strong as before.

  • Check for low refrigerant levels.
  • Check the air filter.
  • Check for frost buildup on the evaporator coils.

Thanks for the help here, Jenelyn.

Cheers,

Renz
