Nest thermostat

AdamAsher
Community Member

Hello good people of googles nest forum, I’m having trouble with my thermostat making my ac unit short cycle.

The hot side of the unit works just fine but cool does not. If I bypass the thermostat (touch the wires I need together) the unit cools perfectly. My first question has to do with the power numbers of the device.

i have three different power values

VIN is 36.131 and fluctuates

LIN is 385

PS is C-385

do any of these figures cause concern?

Hi AdamAsher,

Thanks for reaching out to the community! I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing the AC unit short cycling. I understand these power readings can cause concern, and I know how important it is to get your system and thermostat working as expected. Help's here!

I also appreciate the detailed power readings provided; this can definitely help us to effectively troubleshoot. To continue investigating this inconvenience, I’d like to ask the following:

In the meantime, I'd suggest checking the following:

  • Check that the wires are fully inserted into the terminal and the connector buttons are securely pushed down. This ensures proper wire connections. For reference, you can check out this article: Troubleshoot strange heating or cooling behavior. Important: Before touching any wires, turn off the power to your HVAC system at the breaker box.
  • Check the air filter. Your HVAC system requires good airflow to operate properly. A clogged air filter can restrict airflow over the cooling coils, causing them to freeze and shut down the system.

Please keep me posted.

Best regards,

Jenniffer

Hi AdamAsher,

Thanks for following up!

I appreciate the information you've provided. I would like to confirm whether you have checked the previously described steps. Also, a picture of the current wiring installation would be helpful.

Please keep me posted.

Best regards,

Jenniffer

The previous steps for troubleshooting are not helpful. I don’t have a picture of the wiring currently. Can we proceed without it? It’s been days since I’ve had A/C.

Hi AdamAsher,

Thanks for the reply!

I understand how important it is for you to have your AC system and your Nest thermostat working as they should. However, in order to continue investigating the case, it's important to isolate specific details that could cause short cycles. The picture of your wiring installation is important to verify what type of system and wires you have installed on the thermostat. This will be a great piece of information to accurately diagnose the inconvenience and provide effective solutions.

Please keep me updated.

Best regards,

Jenniffer

Sending an image doesn’t even seem like an option from my end. I do not see where to upload. I can assure you the wiring is correct, if I hook my old thermostat back up everything works perfectly. If I touch the cooling and 24v power wires together it works. If you need a picture I need to know how to upload it.
