Next learning thermostat

We set our Nest learning thermostat to away when we left home for 2 weeks in late Feb. I had eco temperature set to 9.5c and eco was set to on. When I checked in the app yesterday, the heating had been on for up to 18 hours per day since the day after we left home. I noticed that there was a schedule entered and the heating pattern was similar to the schedule.

My understanding was that, when set to 'away' the heating would only turn on to maintain the room temp at the eco temperature, which would not have required the heating to be on for anything like the time it called by the Nest thermostat. All of the articles I read say that eco mode can save you money but for the 4 days up to yesterday, we burned £50 of gas..

Can anyone explain why to me why this happened and how I can prevent it? I have deleted the schedules but left the Nest in eco mode, I'm watching it daily now to see what happens. I don't want to turn the heating off because if the weather freezes over, we need to protect the ch pipes.

Thanks
