I just installed the Nest Learning (3rd Generation) in my condo according to the install instructions. My previous thermostat only had a Y and R connection. (The Nest install instructions directed me to install Y1 and RH to align). Condo has low voltage Boiler heating system with radiation baseboard cabinet and Nest appears to be controlling the temperature but only has cooling mode. The lowest level on the Eco setting is 24'C which is too hot for a Canadian winter. (My bill would be huge). I should also mention that I have no A/C. How do I get to heating mode when its not an option?

On the Nest and almost all other combo thermostats, Y controls cooling. W controls heat. Try moving the wire in the Nest base plate from Y1 to W1, replace the Nest in it's base and then go into the Equipment menu on the Nest to see that it configured your system for Heat and no Cooling.

I switched the Y1 wire to W1 and have heat mode but now the heat seems to turn on much more frequently. I will give it a few more days and if it doesn’t seem to be “learning” I’ll have to return it as I’m not entirely convinced it’s compatible with my condo heating. (Boiler with low-voltage radian baseboards.)

I had to switch the wire back to Y as it would just let heat continue to run even well past the temperature. Oh Google help I made note that some boiler 2 wire systems have Y1 controlling both heat and cool. This is clearly the case with mine since even though it only stays in cool mode it is correctly maintaining the temps that I set. I have decided to leave it as is and will just manage using cool mode only with the eco temp turned off
