Peak Billing and Time-of-Use settings

Time-of-Use (peak) electrical billing begins here soon and I’d like to automatically switch between the heat pump (normal heat) and the gas furnace (auxiliary heat) based on Time-of-Use (time of day). For example, during peak times schedule gas furnace heat. Other times heat pump heat. Possibly a couple of times per day.

Do you know of a thermostat that is capable of this task?

Hello Toby-752,

Thanks for reaching out to the Google Nest Community Forum! I'd be happy to take a look at this for you.

It's great that you're thinking ahead about optimizing your energy usage with the upcoming Time-of-Use electrical billing. The Nest thermostat actually offers a feature called "Time of Use" that allows you to set up a schedule based on peak hours.

With the Nest Thermostat, you can create a custom schedule that switches between your heat pump and gas furnace during specific times of the day. By leveraging the Time of Use feature, you can set your preferred heating source for peak times and switch to the more energy-efficient option during off-peak hours.

To set this up, go to your Nest app, select your thermostat, and navigate to the Schedule section. From there, you can create a customized schedule based on your preferences, specifying when you want the gas furnace to be active during peak times and when the heat pump should take over during non-peak hours.

Make sure to check the Time-of-Use Energy Rates and Nest Renew article for more information.

I hope this helps, and stay warm.

Best regards,
Mark
