Power problem with NEST Learning Thermostat

Hi Folks, we have just had a new boiler system installed in our house. Our old system had a simple wireless thermostat powered by two AA batteries.

We have now just installed a NEST Learning Thermostat which works when connected up directly with a USB cable to power it. But when we put it on the base plate it shows an error message. We now understand that the internal battery needs charging up - which we are doing. But how long will this charge last?

The instructions keep referring to wires from the old thermostat but there aren't any - it's wireless. That's why we bought this NEST device because that's wireless as well. So not being able to put an AA battery in it is quite a nuisance and I feel we are going to struggle keeping it charged up.

Any advice would be appreciated?

Thank you for the information @RintyMon . I would be happy to try and assist you.

You mentioned you get a message on the display? Would you be able to take a picture of that?

Also to clarify, all of our thermostat models are designed to work when constantly connected to power, they will not run of the internal battery as that is just to retain settings and to keep power for a bit if moving locations.

Hi @RintyMon. Did you manage to check my colleague's message?

Hi,

Apologies for the delay in replying.

It said H52 but I think you’ve already answered the question. This NEST device replaced a previous wireless thermostat that was powered by 2 x AA batteries. We were of the view that a wireless NEST device, being wireless, wouldn’t require wires!

So the problem is we’ve no way of powering it without being able to insert batteries.

So whilst we think what to do, it’s currently plugged in via a wall socket and a USB adapter, and rested on the floor!

Regards.

Dave.

Hi there again @RintyMon

Thanks for getting back to us and providing all these details. In order to be able to understand the issue with your thermostat, would you kindly provide me with a few pictures of the device? It will help me see the big picture. Feel free to attach as many pictures as needed so I can see clearly what you're trying to explain.

Thanks a lot for your cooperation.

Hi, I’m struggling to upload the photos I’ve taken but basically it is as I’ve described; a Google Nest Learning Thermostat plugged in using a USB cable.  Do you have any suggestions regarding the point I made earlier i.e. we didn’t expect to require a voltage supply when purchasing a wireless thermostat? We expected to simply power it with batteries - because it’s wireless..

We understand your confusion, but as my colleague states, your thermostat won't be able to hold the charge if you keep it unplugged, this is how it was designed. The thermostat is indeed wireless, as it is connected to the internet and to the Heat Link wirelessly. If you have it installed on the wall, you can purchase a stand separately and that way you'll be able to move it around easier and place it wherever you like, but it will need to be plugged into a power socket with a micro USB cable.
