Random temperature adjustments

Roblindqu
Community Member

My next thermostat has started randomly changing my temperature settings to 72F at different times of the day. It seems that there’s a glitch because you can see in this attached history screenshot that around 8PM it’s saying that it’s starting early to hit a 72F set point at 2:30 PM.

Nobody in my house is adjusting the thermostat and we never set heating above 70F in any schedule or any historical manual adjustment.

I am in my local utility’s rush hour savings incentive program and I’m wondering if they would be making remote adjustments? But I’m not sure why they would be turning my temperature UP.

Hello Roblindqu,

Thanks for the update. This doesn't happen normally, but let’s proceed by resetting the Nest Learning Thermostat to factory default and monitoring the case. Follow the steps below:

  1. Sign in to the Nest app.
  2. If you have another home, on the app home screen, tap Menu . Then select the home that has the product you'd like to remove.
  3. On the app home screen, tap Settings Nest settings icon.
  4. Tap the product you'd like to remove.
  5. Scroll down and select Remove [product name].
  6. You'll then be asked to confirm your choice.
  7. On your Nest Learning Thermostat display, go to Settings Nest settings icon and then Reset
  8. Then select All Settings.

Once the device is removed from your Nest app and resets to factory default, add it back to your Nest app and turn off the auto-schedule.

Keep us posted.

Regards,

Renz

Hi Roblindqu,

Thanks for posting here in the Google Nest Community. We're sorry for the trouble this may have caused you. Let's see what's going on. The Nest Learning Thermostat can learn your day-to-day schedule and adjust it accordingly. Auto-schedule learning is on by default, but it's just one option for scheduling temperatures on your Nest thermostat. If you'd like to learn about all the available options, check out our article about Nest thermostat temperature schedules.

Also, you can manually set the schedule for the Nest Learning Thermostat, open the Quick View menu, and then select the Schedule Nest thermostat schedule icon.

It will show you the schedule for the mode that your thermostat is currently in. So if your thermostat is in heat mode, the heating schedule will be shown. If it’s in cool mode, it will show you the cooling schedule.

Manually set your thermostat's temperature mode.

If you have other questions, let us know. We're happy to help.

Cheers,

Renz

Hi@RenzJ , thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, this more complicated than your offered solution.

I’ve had both home/away assist and auto-schedule turned off for as long as I can remember, so that shouldn’t be causing this.

Also, my schedule is pretty simple, and repeats every day:

  • 67 F at 6:00 AM
  • 67 F at 2:30 PM (a “reminder” temperature)
  • 58 F at 9:45 PM
  • Repeat the next day

Hi RenzJ, I think I figured out the issue. During the warmer (air conditioning) months, I created a Google Home automation for leaving home. My thermostat was included in that automation by default, but I did not have it set to change the temperature or change my home/away status. So, you’d think that the thermostat would be unaffected when I told my Google home I was leaving through the Google Nest Mini. But, for some reason it appears that the automation was adjusting the temperature to 72 F when on heating mode. I use the automation to turn off my smart switches when leaving, so I figured it out (finally) when I ran out for a few minutes and use the “I’m leaving” automation, then returned to a hotter than usual house with the Nest set to 72 F.

Not sure why this was happening, but I have since deleted the thermostat from the automation and haven’t had any issues for the last day and a half.
