Randomly lost wire recognition

Srgebhart

Nest has been installed for over a year, suddenly lost power. It's giving a code E298, wires not detected. I checked the breaker and noticed the HVAC was tripped. Pushed it back on. Did a factory reset of the nest. It's still not recognizing wires.

It may not be the case, but it is possible there is a problem with the HVAC system or the thermostat wire connection at the HVAC system.  You may want to take a look to see if there are any warning or error lights on the furnace, heat pump, etc.  If you are comfortable peak inside to see if the thermostat wires are securely attached.

We definitely have considered that, but will need to wait a few days as storms pass through. Our unit is on our roof and not the safest access, especially not during storms

Still troubleshooting. I don't think the issue is the nest at all. Circuit breaker is good. Outdoor HVAC unit fuses and wires are good. Going to check the equipment in the attic next.

It was a loose wire to the furnace in the attic! Poorly installed
