Reduced Alexa functionality with Nest thermostat-impact upon people with disabilities

It is so disappointing that it is not longer possible to turn heating on with Alexa commands when the Nest thermostat is set to Eco or Off. one of the main reasons we bought a Nest thermostat is that it was possible for my wife, who is visually impaired, to control the heating with voice commands. Was the impact upon accessibility considered when making this change?
