Replacing Nest learning thermostat 3rd gen display

My display went out but my Nest continued to function properly through the app.  I have purchased a new Nest and need to install it.  Specifically,  I'm just planning on swapping out the displays. I have no idea how to make my current Nest (with non functional display with black screen)  quit trying to work because I cannot access any of the settings features. Where do I begin? Please help.

Er - take it off the mounting plate? It can’t do a thing once you do that, no? Then remove it from the app, put the new one on the old base, and add it in the app?

Hey there,

Thanks so much for the helpful reply Zouf.

I wanted to follow up and see if I could be of any help. I found an article with more details on how to remove your device from the app. Please let me know if you are still having any trouble from here, as I would be happy to take a closer look and assist you further.

Best regards,
Jake

I did get my new one installed and also copied the schedule and other settings that I could find. After one night the old one went "offline".

I was wondering if I plugged it into a charging device (and kept it plugged in)  if it could somehow be setup and used as a temperature sensor in my basement? If so, what would I need to do?

Hi there,

I saw your post and wanted to chime in — I'm sorry for the delay. I just want to follow up if you're still encountering the issue. Please let me know as I'll be willing to assist you from here.

I appreciate your help Jake and Zouf.

Jenelyn

I have the new thermostat installed. However,  no one has indicated if it was possible to use the old one as a temperature sensor as long as it was plugged into a power source via usb-a.

Hey Deanne424,

Thanks for keeping up with our Nest Thermostat. I understand that you still want to use your existing thermostat display, but the Nest Thermostats won't work as a standalone sensor. Please let me know if you have further questions or concerns.

Best,

Jenelyn

That's too bad 😞 Thank you. That is all I need. I appreciate the community help to get my new Nest installed. I was definitely over thinking it!
