So I am pondering getting a Nest Thermostat, but not sure how I'd replace the existing controls.
The boiler is a Baxi Duo-Tec 28 A. It has space for an option mechanical timer, in place of which I currently have a Salus rxbc605 receiver. The thermostat used to turn the heating on and off is a Salus RT500 which sits in the living room and communicates with the rxbc605 wirelessly.
So everything I've seen so far for the Nest systems seem to have the link as an device that is external to the boiler and uses wires where you can disconnect the old system and wire in the new Nest link box. I'm not sure that is going to work for my system as the rxbc605 has contacts at the top that I assume connect into something inside the boiler; so I'm not sure how the Nest link box would wire into the boiler.
Has anyone had experience with similar systems, or is this a case of just having to contact a local boiler engineer and get them to check the internals of the boiler to see how things connect and potentially do new wiring, etc?

Thank you for the information. You can have a look here at our compatibility information and our compatibility tester. It may give you a better idea if your system is compatible.
Just to check, are you thinking of installing the Google Nest E Learning thermostat or the 3rd Generation learning thermostat? You can have a look at this link here to see some wiring examples for the Heat Link side of the 3rd Generation. You can have a look here at the installation for the E version to get an idea of what wires it uses.
If you are not sure of what wires you have at the boiler side you can get in touch with a Nest Pro or your favorite installer to have a look at them and determine which are which. You can use our Nest Pro finder tool here.
