Smart features not working on nest thermostat

Hi All,

Need a little help. I'd been putting it off for a couple of years now but now it's time to resolve this... My nest Learning thermostat is pretty much a dumb thermostat now. It won't connect to Nest app, Google home, etc. It connects to wifi, but is stuck on a version released in 2019 (5.9.4-5) - when trying to update firmware it says it will "try again later" or something to that effect.

I tried the following troubleshooting steps -

1. Noted the ping was 3k +, so assigned it a static IP on my network in hopes it would give it more stability... Ping is now 6.3k. I don't even know where to begin on that one.

2. Tried resetting network etc multiple times at the direction of a similar post I found elsewhere, in hopes it would let me update firmware.

I can't connect it to either apps, and unfortunately it's screwed into the wall so am reluctant to remove it from the wall unless I absolutely have to.

Heat Link works fine on both my thermostats- I can control the heating on either floor with 0 problems by manually using the thermostats, but all other features are dud.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Please let me know if there are any questions and I will do my best to clarify. Thermostats would have been bought approx 2017 so warranty would be dead sadly. It was a gift so have no invoices etc which Nest keeps demanding

This problem is so bad that I am about to set the thermostat on fire with gasoline in my fire pit and record the burning to be posted on social media. Years of the same problem, All Google can suggest is to "reset" the network. I have suggested several times that the Network will not reset because the network interface in the Nest thermostat is no longer working. I determined that with a WiFi reader. Good-bye Google Nest Thermostat Gen 3. The biggest waste of money...

I am sorry to hear about your experience @IrrateScott . Do you still have the unit at the location? If so, I would be happy to look into what may be going on with it together with you to see if we can do anything about the behaviour.

This just started happening to mine about a week ago. Can’t connect to ANY WiFi networks even my hotspot and I have had it for about 18 months. And it’s annoying to walk by it now because all it does is remind me it’s not online and can’t tell me the temp unless I click on it. ANNOYING. Seemed cool to be high tech, now not so much.

I am sorry to hear about the difficulties you are facing with your thermostat @Cpop234 . I would be happy to try and assist you with it.

If you go to Settings> Network, do you see any message about it not being able to connect to the network or a code or does it look for networks for some time before stating it may be hidden or to far away?

Thanks for reaching out to us here @JinoG  and for all the details. I am sorry to hear you are facing difficulties with your device and I would be happy to try and assist.

You mention you have 2 thermostat units at the location. Do both of them have the same behaviour or is it only one of them?

Thanks for letting me know.

Let us try a few things. First, go to Settings> Reset> Network and perform this 2 times, one after the other. Once done, connect it to a hotspot using mobile data from a mobile device instead of the Wi-Fi at the location.

Do make sure to turn off the Wi-Fi on your mobile device to make the hotspot using mobile data.

Once done, check the network readings. Let me know what the MS ping and the signal strength is.

Try again adding it to update it and let me know how it goes. Also, try adding it in the Nest app and let me know how that goes.

Hello,

My apologies, busy couple of weeks and haven't had a chance to check. Definitely will try doing that, thanks! Is there any way to not add it to nest app again? The QR and details to do that are on the part screwed into the wall...

Hi there @JinoG! You can grab the ring of the thermostat and pull it towards it, and there will be no damage to the thermostat or the base. It was designed to be detachable, so there's no need to worry about it, just go ahead. You can also leave it disconnected from the app, but then the remote control features will continue to be useless.
