Good evening,
I am looking to install a Google Nest Learning Thermostat in the house we just purchased, and the compatibility wizard is saying my system is not able to be utilized due to it having stranded wires. I don’t see any high voltage indicators on the current “White Roger’s” thermostat, so is there a workaround to the stranded wire issue? Thanks for any insights you can provide.

Hello J-Bax,
Thanks for reaching out to the Google Nest Community Forum. I'd be happy to take a look at this for you.
The Nest Thermostats don’t support stranded wires; they require solid-core copper wires.
If your low-voltage wires are stranded (each of the wires is a bundle of smaller wires), reinstall your previous thermostat and contact a local pro to have your thermostat wiring replaced or adapted with solid-core wire so it can work with Nest thermostats.
Best,
Mark

Just wanted to provide an update. I purchased a set of Wago wire connectors and spliced the stranded wires to solid core wires and hooked up the Nest accordingly. It’s working seamlessly with no issues whatsoever.
I would highly recommend the Wago compact wire connectors to anyone who has this stranded wire issue.

Hi J-Bax,
Awesome! That's so nice of you to share an alternate option. I'm glad to hear that you were able to successfully install your Nest Thermostat.
It looks like we can consider this one complete, so I will lock the thread within 24 hours unless I can help out with anything else.
Best regards,
Mark
