Swapping 3rd Gen Nest to 4th Gen

I have a 3rd Gen Nest already installed in my house. I just bought the new 4th Gen Nest that got announced a couple of weeks ago.

Will I be able to simply swap the thermostats? Will the 4th Gen Nest fit on the 3rd Gen Nest base plate?

Yes, you can replace the 3rd Gen with the new 4th Gen but you have to replace everything.

So the baseplate where the wires go for the 3rd Gen isn't usable for the 4th Gen?

I was hoping I could just pop off the old Nest and pop in the new Nest in 5 seconds.

Correct. The 4th Gen has 12 terminals and the 3rd Gen only has 10.

I currently am too going to upgrade my 3rd Gen with the 4th Gen that arrived yesterday and was wondering should I delete the 3rd Gen from the Home App first before starting setup of the 4th Gen?

Hooked up mine today and as mentioned above, I had to change everything. The new baseplate has a few more options. However, it didn’t take too long and was quite straight forward.

Did you delete the old 3rd gen thermostat from your Google Home app first before beginning the install of the 4th gen?  I plan on doing mine tonight.

yes i removed the old one so it doesn't conflict with the new one.

Did you lose all the heating and cooling data you had that was associated with your old one?

Yes.  All gone when you delete the old thermostat

Just helped make my decision to not upgrade and saved me $380 (was also going to upgrade all my sensors).  Thank you!
