Switching nest thermostat face without replacing anything else

Community Member

My nest has been acting weird. At 1st I was getting low battery notifications when it was connected to RC power. HVAC company was here for bi-annual check up and attached C wire and after a day problem went away. These past 2 it has been disconnecting from wifi, not acknowledging movement when walking past and I feel as it not properly sensing temperature. I have another nest in box, I was just wondering if I can swap out the interfaces without changing the back plate

Hi Jp3684,

Thanks for reaching out to us, and I'm sorry to hear about the situation. I want to check if you are still in need of any help. If so, please answer the following:

  1. Where are you located? From North America or Europe?
  2. What type of Nest Thermostat do you have?
  3. Does the thermostat display show any codes or messages?
  4. Can your other devices find your Wi-Fi network name (SSID)?
  5. Are you trying to connect to the 2.4 GHz or the 5 GHz network?
  6. Has your thermostat ever connected to your network?"
    • Was there any recent network changes like a new router or a recent move?
    • Was there any changes to the network name or password.
  7. How far away is the thermostat from the router?
  8. Are there devices or appliances (such as baby monitors, microwaves, cordless phones, etc.) near the thermostat?
  9. What's the software version of your thermostat?
  10. Are you controlling your thermostat from the Nest or Google Home app or the thermostat display?
    • If from the Nest or Google Home app: Is your mobile device on a different Wi-Fi network than the thermostat?

Also, if your thermostat is either Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd generation or Nest Thermostat E and your thermostat does not wake up when you walk passed by it, go to Settings > Display to make sure that the thermostat enables Wake on approach

On the other hand, you may swap out your thermostat display for another of the same Nest thermostat without changing the backplate. After you've successfully swapped your thermostat displays from one another, kindly observe the behavior of the thermostat you've swapped so we can check what causes the situation.

I'll look forward to your response.
