Switching out the Nest base

My Nest had the W5 error.  Replacement sent.  I was told that all I would have to do is to unplug the old Nest and plug the new one on the wall.  Not I am being informed that I have to change the base.  Please list step by step instructions on how to change the base, for someone who knows NOTHING about how to play with electricity other than to plug something in.
