Thermostat Starts at Midnight, and lowers the set temp.

I have had this unit for years...

All settings are set to off, that are tied to smarts, learning, away, electric, leaf etc.

Yet, at midnight, every night, setting would adjust it self from let's say 78F to 75F, and keeps running until it reaches that new temp.

Not based on schedule, as schedule is 78F all day. 

Just waste of electricity.

Thanks for reaching out. I understand that your Nest thermostat turns on at midnight. I know this can be frustrating, but I'm happy to help.

Here are the steps to turn off the settings that might be causing this situation. Please check if you tried the correct steps on the following steps.

1. Go to Settings > Nest Sense > Auto Schedule. Select No and then tap Done.
2. Go to Settings > Eco. Then, under Heat to and Cool to, select one and turn the dial until you see Off. Finally, tap Done.
3. Go to Settings > Home Away Assist. Select Stop Using.
4. Finally go to settings > reset > schedule > reset and turn the ring to reset.

Once you follow these steps, your thermostat will no longer turn on at midnight. Please let me know if you have any other questions.
