Thermostat causes compressor to short cycle

And is missing C wire. Was installed by previous owner and we have no auxiliary material.

No C wire can cause the compressor to short cycle in some systems.

You can check to see if it's the thermostat causing the problem by taking the Y, R, and G wires. Twisting them together and seeing if the short cycle happens. Be sure to turn the breaker off for the HVAC before doing that.
