Once again my Nest Thermostat (1st gen) is entering manual mode all by itself. I have posted previously under Sseedubs, and initially had some success changing my wifi settings.
Unfortunately the random entering 'manual mode' started again and I decided to eliminate one of the possible issues, which was loss of contact with the heat link, so I have now wired that in, but it continues to enter manual mode randomly. Sometimes when I am asleep and others when I am out at work, costing me money in unnecessary heating.
I have resorted to disabling the thermostat and only switching it on when I need heating, so making it next to useless for setting any sort of schedule.
Any last suggestions would be helpful, otherwise I will have to seek another thermostat (not nest).

Just to add, it also goes into Manual mode when I have switched it from Heat to Off.......I have now reset it back to factory settings and see how it goes.

Hi Axel,
Its a first gen nest thermostat. There is no display on the heat link, just a light (green). I have reset everything back to factory settings.
The display on the thermostat is currently black (off), but when it goes into manual mode, it turns orange as the temp is switched up.
It has today gone back into manual mode, despite the thermostat switched to off. I have switched the heating off manually via the boiler, so it isnt currently causing the heating to come on:
The thermostat/heat link details direct from nest are as follows:

Hi Seedubs68,
Thanks for your response.
I really appreciate you taking the time to figure out what's causing your thermostat to change to manual mode all of a sudden.
When did you start experiencing this behaviour constantly again? Did you see any error codes? Since you told me last time the same behavior was resolved by changing your network to 5 GHz, it's important to consider multiple factors such as if there's any source of interference between your thermostat and the Heat Link.
How often do you notice your thermostat going into manual mode? Remember that your thermostat will only turn on manual mode if the thermostat either disconnects or you press the button on the heatlink. So, check to make sure the heatlink's button isn't dirty or damaged in such a way that could trigger the manual mode unexpectedly.
Let me know how it goes.
Regards,
Angel.

Hi, it has always had this issue, but when the heating is on, we just didnt notice it until it started coming on at night. I did seem to stop when I changed my 5ghz wifi, but that was only temporary. Since we switched the heating off for summer, I have noticed that it comes on randomly, and sets the temp to around 19, if the temp never gets to 19, it stays on manual mode until I either notice it and switch it back to off, or the temp gets above 19 and and it automatically switches back to off.
Heatlink is fine, nothing noticeable, led is a steady green. I will monitor for the next few days to see when it happens again. I noticed that there are no logs (as its switched off) and nothing is recorded for any disconnect.
If it happens again, I might try and disconnect the wireless (weave) network so that it only uses the wired connection. I have also requested my historic logs from takeout.google.com. Not sure if those include any application logs or whether they just show the temp history?
I will keep you posted. I am hoping to get it sorted before the temp drops and I need my heating on again.
Many thanks

Hi there,
Thanks for following up!
I understand how inconvenient this situation can be. I also appreciate your efforts in trying to resolve this inconvenience with the heat link randomly entering Manual Mode.
I appreciate that you'll monitor the thermostat. If you encounter the same behavior, please let me know.
Keep me updated.
Best regards,
Jenniffer

Hi,
So it entered manual mode again last night, upon checking the heatlink, the LED is amber. I have reset it and it has gone back to green and the thermostat has returned to off.
What I do not understand is how it disconnects, when it clearly states it has wired and wireless connections. Is there a way to disable just the wireless and always use the wired. My guess is that the wireless is being used and is dropping out (for some unknown reason) but it is then not using the wired connection.
Any pointers would be helpful. Failing that can a new heatlink be provided?
Thanks
Chris

Hi,
So I have managed to disable the wireless connection to the heatlink by powering off the heatlink for 30 seconds, bringing it back up and now it states in the settings that it is only connected via the wired connection.
I will see how it goes and if it drops out again and will let you know.
Cheers
Chris

So, again the heating has come on by itself, this time the thermostat did not got to manual mode, it remained off. But the heatlink has disconnected (despite only being wired) and was flashing orange. I have reset the heatlink and will monitor it for the next week or two and see how it goes. Would a new heatlink resolve this issue? If it was failing all the time I would obviously get a new one, but this intermittent issue is frustrating to narrow down.

Hello Seedubs68,
Thanks for your update.
Since you've monitored your Heat Link's connection with your Nest Thermostat, and it seems they are having trouble communicating reliably, I think it would be great to take a closer look at the environment surrounding the Heat Link and the power your Heat Link and thermostat are getting.
Therefore, I suggest you fill out this form. Doing so will allow us to contact you directly by email to gather more information about the disconnections with your Heat Link and determine the best course of action.
Please let me know once you've completed the form. I'll keep an eye out for your response.
Regards,
Angel.
