Thermostat installation troubleshooting

nadiaaak
Community Member

I am trying to install a new nest thermostat. It keeps either giving me the error code E5 - when I check the trouble shooting site E5 doesn't exist as an error code. https://widgets.nest.com/nest-thermostat-troubleshooter/?hl=en#e5

Or it tells me to remove the nest and reconnect to base.

I have tried making the wires tighter and making sure everything inside isn't pushing the nest away from the base, it's still not working.

What kind of system do you have can you describe is it Heat and AC or heat pump etc.

Can you post a pic of the wires you have on the base, and pic of the old tstat wiring.

The E5 error will appear if the Nest detects that there is not wires connected to the W1 or Y1 terminals. There must be a least one wire connected to the W1 or Y1 terminal. Check the push connector for the W1 and Y1 terminal to make sure they are seated properly.

Also you must have Heat and AC since you have

Y (AC signal) and W (heat signal) and G (fan signal).

The red wire is + Power  and  the blue wire is  - C common

You said you have a heat only system no air conditioning.

This makes no sense because you have:

Yellow wire for Y1  is for the air conditioning

White wire W1 is for heat

Green wire G is for the fan

Red is + 24v power

Blue is -24v power (C common)

Everything looks like you wired it correctly.

Did you tell the Nest during setup it is a Forced Air Heat with Air conditioning system?

What exactly is happening do you get any fan coming on or any error messages from the Nest?
