Thermostat suddenly changed its ability to measure temperature

After more than two years of the wall-mounted Nest thermostat consistently being accurate it suddenly started reading off by 10 degrees Fahrenheit.  After having to provide proof that the thermostat is not accurate (I have a picture of the infrared thermometer and the Nest) tech support has told me to disconnect the thermostat from my WiFi for 24 hours and then reconnect it to WiFi. Please someone tell me how this could possibly help. I’m a tech-guy and this makes no sense to me. Tech support couldn’t explain how this could/would help. I’m doing it. But please someone tell me how this would work.

Hi Slatt,

Thanks for posting! It's understandable why the  tech support's explanation wouldn't be satisfying, especially for a tech-savvy person. Disconnecting the Nest thermostat from WiFi for 24 hours might seem like an odd solution, Here's why they might have suggested this:

  • Software Glitch: Occasionally, software glitches can cause electronic devices to malfunction. A complete power cycle (disconnecting from WiFi essentially restarts the device) can sometimes clear these temporary glitches and get the device functioning normally again.

And also you can check if the sunblock is on, because the Direct sunlight can cause the Nest thermostat temperature sensors to heat up, so the thermostat may think that the ambient temperature in the room is higher than it is. Here are the steps if you are using the nest app:

  • Open the Nest app and select the thermostat.
  • Go to Settings Nest Sense Sunblock.
  • If Sunblock is off, turn it on by the slider Off.

If you are not using the nest app you can do it on the thermostat itself:

  • On the thermostat display, go to Settings Nest Sense Sunblock.
  • Select Yes to make sure Sunblock is on.

Double-check sensor placement: Make sure there are no air vents, direct sunlight, or heat sources near the thermostat that could be affecting the reading.

If the issue remains after trying these steps and reconnecting the WiFi, it might be best to fill out this Contact Us form to get further troubleshooting steps, and see if they have a different way to resolve the issue.

Let me know how it goes!

Regards,

Ivan
