Thermostat turning on via motion sensor despite motion sensor turned off

I just had someone drop something off inside my house. This person's phone isn't registered to my home, and the home remained in away mode. Yet the heat turned on when they entered. The activity log says this was due to a "scheduled temperature" even though the thermostat is supposed to remain in Eco mode at all times when the home is in away mode.

In presence sensing settings, the thermostat and all other devices are disabled, and only the phone location is enabled.

Is there anything I can do to prevent this? It's warmer outside than in my house right now so this is wasting gas.

Hi xyzyxx,

Yikes! I'm sorry to hear the inconvenience you're experiencing with your thermostat turning on via the motion sensor, despite the motion sensor being turned off in the presence sensing settings. Here are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:

  1. Double-check the presence sensing settings in the Google Home app. Ensure that all devices and sensors, including the motion sensor, are disabled for presence sensing. Confirm that only the phone location is enabled for presence sensing.
  2. Review your thermostat's schedule and any automations set up in the Google Home app or other connected smart home platforms. Make sure there are no conflicting schedules or automations that could be triggering the thermostat to turn on when it shouldn't.
  3. In the Google Home app, go to the home settings and check the "Away mode" settings. Ensure that the desired temperature and thermostat mode (such as Eco mode) are selected for the away mode. It's possible that the away mode settings need to be adjusted to align with your preferences.
  4. If possible, test the motion sensor to ensure it's functioning correctly. You can do this by manually triggering motion in front of the sensor and observing if it registers any activity. If the motion sensor is malfunctioning, you may need to contact the manufacturer or support for further assistance.

Let us know if that helps.

Best,

Zoe
