I have a Trane 4TWR4 heat pump and trying to connect to google nest E. When talking to someone (customer support) they said leave the black wire (believed to be emergency heat) what should I do? How accurate is that information?

I was told
Y1– yellow

G— green

R—red ( don’t need jumper)

W1– white

C- Blue

*OB— orange

and leave the black disconnected.

Hey there,

Thanks for reaching out and for the photo.

Correct me if I'm seeing the terminal labels of where the wires are connected to correctly:

Red- R (with jumper wire to RC)

Yellow - Y

Blue- B

Orange- W

Green- G

White - W2

Black - Y2

What system do you have? Do you have a heat pump or a conventional HVAC system?

Best,

Melba

It’s a heat pump

Hey there,

Got it. If that is the case, you wire it just like what our support representative provided above. The only downside is, you won't have the capability to use the emergency heat anymore. Should you want to use that black wire, try our Nest Learning Thermostats instead.

Also, since you have a dual fuel system which is a combination of a heat pump for primary heating and cooling, and a furnace (usually gas or oil) that provides a second and/or third stage of heating, it's important for a professional to assess the requirements for your specific dual fuel configuration since choosing incorrect options for a dual fuel system can result in damage to your system. Contact a local pro.
