Two Homes Setup, want Home/Away to use two different phones

ZRanch
Community Member

Hello, I have two Nest Homes setup and I want to be able to have each home sync to a different cell phone for the home/away feature.

Both homes are connected to one gmail account.

I have successfully added a guest cell phone to my second home named "Guest House".  It shows both my phone and my guest house renter's phone.  If I turn off my phone for home/away in the guest house, it is also turning it off to use my phone for my main house, which is not what I want.  If I turn it back on under my main house, it is also turning it on for the guest house.

Is there a way to have two homes and have separate phones for each home to use the home/away feature?

Thanks!

Hey ZRanch,

Thanks for reaching out. When you enable the Home/Away Assist feature it uses your phone’s location. If you have a family member who activates this feature and they’re in the same home structure, basically you and your family member are sharing this feature. For example: when you’re away and the member is home the camera algorithm will consider that you’re home, the camera will keep on instead of turning off. We suggest turning this feature off on the member’s Nest app. Your Nest devices can’t be paired to two different home structures so having two home structures isn’t possible.

Check out this link for additional information.

Thanks,

Archie

Hi Archie,

I have two different homes setup in my Google home and nest app.
One home has two nest thermostats and the second home has one.
I can see both homes separately and all three thermostats in the nest app correctly placed under the correct home.
I want my main house to sync to my phone and my second house to sync to my renter’s phone.
Does that help to clarify?

Thank you,

Sigrid

Hi ZRanch,

Thanks for posting here in Community, and I'm sorry for the late reply.

To sync a particular home to your renter's phone, you can follow the steps in this guide to invite them as a member of the home. In thay way, they can control it on their phone while the Nest Thermostat is still added on your phone.

Let us know how that works.

Best,

Zoe

Thank you for your reply. I already have my renter setup as a member of the home.
The problem is, when she leaves or is home it is controlling my two AC units in my house in addition to hers. And the same for me with her house.
I need the app to recognize that the AC unit listed to her house (separate from my house in the app) should only recognize if she is home or away and the two units in my house to only recognize if I’m home and away.
Does that help to clarify?

Hi ZRanch,

Thanks for getting back to us. Please set your phone to default and remove your renter's phone from the Home/Away assist feature location.

  • Open the Nest app.
  • Tap Settings.
  • Select Home/Away Assist.
  • Tap What decides if you’re home.
  • Select a Nest product, then tap the switch to enable or disable its participation in Home/Away Assist.

Regards,

Zoe

Thank you.  I think you misunderstood.  I want both my renter and myself to be able to use home/away--BUT I want my "home" to know when I'm home/away and my "guest house home" (setup as two homes in the Nest app) to know when my renter is home/away.  Does that help to clarify?

Hey ZRanch,

Ah, got it. Select your home and then tap Settings, then select Home/Away Assist, then tap What decides if you’re home. Select your Nest Thermostat, then tap the switch to enable your location for Home/Away Assist. For the guest home, just the same steps but instead of selecting your Yes to your phone, switch it to No then select your renter's phone then switch it to Yes. In that way, your guest home will be able to sense if your renter is home/away.

Zoe
