Using existing thermostat with NEST

Player1

I'd like to know if it's possible to install a Nest Thermostat to an existing thermostat wire (in parallel) to give my system the benefits of a smart thermostat. The idea is to keep the functionality of my thermostat while allowing the Nest to take control of scheduling and allow me to control my system wirelessly. My existing thermostat gives me a lot of options to control my heat pump like quiet mode, static pressure, and up to 4-5 velocity settings. All I want from the Nest is to tell my system to run at the settings selected in the existing thermostat (essentially, override its call). I can achieve this in theory by keeping the existing thermostat in a setting higher or lower (summer/ winter) than the Nest. I know this is technical, hopefully someone out there can tell me if this can work.

Hey Player1,

What you're describing isn't with the design nor capabilities of the Nest Thermostat. While it's possible to run more than one thermostat with an HVAC unit, they generally end up overriding one another each time one sends a signal. It's sort of a last signal received type of function unless the HVAC unit is set up with some sort of zoned control to recognize the individual thermostats. But using the Nest to interface with another thermostat in unison would create some conflicts.

It is an interesting thought, however, and I would love to hear the community's input on being able to combine or stack thermostats with Nest to marry their features. I'm not an engineer, but if such a thing was possible it would seem to be beneficial for many who are in similar situations.

Thanks,

Jeff

Hi Jeff, thanks for the reply. The idea is for the Nest to continuously override the main thermostat and only use the main thermostat for specific functions that are only available on it. I think you confirmed that it may work. I’ll look more into this thank you.

Hey again, Player1.

I guess it's one of those situations where it's impossible to know without testing. I hate to sell you on the idea of "maybe" but we just don't the concrete answer on this. If you give this a go, definitely report back and let us know if it does what you are looking to do or where it's falling short. Maybe we can brainstorm and work on it to get what you're hoping for.

Thanks,
Jeff

Hi Player1,

It's been some time since I checked in here, so I wanted to follow up and see how things were going for you. If you're still working on this, let me know and I'll be happy to jump back and and continue helping.

Thanks,
Jeff
