I moved and recently reinstalled my nest at the new house. Everything is functioning EXCEPT google assistant won’t control it anymore. I used to be able to say Hey Google change the temperature to x degrees and now that doesn't work, in fact no voice commands or automations work for it. I can control it through my google home app. When I ask the thermostat to do anything related to the thermostat it says the “nest thermostat doesn't support that functionality.” I never had this problem at the other house.

Same problem just started for me too.

I have also lost the ability to use assistant voice controls on the “Nest Thermostat” 1st generation. This was purchased new and installed a few months ago. Unfortunately Google has now made it impossible to continue using the Nest app (which was a joy compared to the google apps). Everything was working though until a few days ago. Now the google assistant / home just answers with “Sorry, I didn’t understand or a flippant “Actually, the nest thermostat doesn’t support that functionality”. However, it can tell me the temperature and what mode it’s in. this is pathetic.
I have reset, removed, factory reset, and re-installed both the home speaker and the Nest Thermostat. No improvement.

Hello folks,
I'm sorry to hear you're having issues controlling your Nest Thermostats with your Google Home speaker. We'd be happy to take a look at this.
To avoid confusion with the general commands. Please give this command a try: "Ok Google, set the thermostat to Off mode" or "Turn thermostat to Off mode". You can also try by saying the name you've provided followed by the command.
Let us know if that works.
Regards,
Mark

When I tried that it got really confused, and kept telling me “to switch your best thermostat to eco mode sat ‘set thermostat to eco” When I tried saying that it gave me the same message that nest thermostat doesn’t support that function.
07-25-2023 07:42 PM
I tried the comands as you suggested with the same results the user Whatsup1 stated in their reply.
Still not able to control the thermostat with any of the voice commands. For the record I’ve had a nest thermostat for about ten years. When the google systems are working, it has never required such a specific command to adjust the temp.
you can see in my previous post that even commands using the assistant app are understood but not followed.

Hey there,
I know it has been a while, but I wanted to ensure that everything was covered here.
How's it going? Have you tried performing any steps, such as resetting them, in the past few weeks? Were there any progress? Also, you can try creating Routines with the same action to see if it works automatically.
Keep us posted.
Regards,
Mark

Hi Mark, no, sadly nothing has changed. I’ve tried all the hacks, even putting it in my routines, but I continue to get “it doesn’t support this function.” ☹️
09-11-2023 07:58 PM
Hello Whatsup1,
I'm sorry to hear the issue still persists. Please make sure that the thermostat and the Google Home speaker are connected to the same Wi-Fi connection. Are other commands compatible with your Google Home speakers? Please try to control Google Nest or Home devices by voice with its sample commands.
Let us know how it goes.
Regards,
Mark

Hi Mark. Yes, they are on the same WiFi. And voice commands work for everything else (ie controlling the tv). There are times it will tell me that my lights aren’t connected but I can get around that with routines or another command (therefore they are connected), and I don’t know why it has that problem either but there are work arounds. However, it still tells me that it doesn’t support that function of adjusting the temperature through voice command.

Hello there,
I know it has been a while, but I wanted to ensure that everything was covered here.
Are you experiencing intermittent issues controlling your smart devices in your home aside from your Nest Thermostat? What's the make and model of the phone you're using? Do you have Google Home or Google Nest smart speakers? If so, please restart them by unplugging the power cord, and try unliking and relinking your Nest Thermostat in the Nest app by resetting the account connection in its Reset settings. This will disconnect your thermostat from your account, so try adding it back again.
Make sure that the Nest Thermostat appears in the Google Home app before attempting to control it again.
Let me know how it goes.
Regards,
Mark

Hi Mark,
I have tried all the steps you mentioned and others multiple times…
to the point that I have given up. The main feature we used to enjoy from the nest, now google thermostat and the assistant, was the ability to control or modify the heat or AC basic functions and temperatures via voice command. It is now lost completely. Although, google assistant will still tell me the temperature information, it will no longer modify it.
google is ruining the successful nest products, by changing to its platform and interfaces.
even the google home app is awful.
The Nest interface had its room to improve, but sadly the beauty of its functionality and graphic user interface have been replaced by far less useful, less functional google junk.
Very dissatisfied.

i think mark joseph is a bot. no more helpful than calling google support. this is a known problem and google refuses to address it. i spent hours on the phone.....just the same "delete/re-add, reboot, wifi" runaround and excuses. amazon alexa/echo can control your nest thermostat devices just fine. i used to prefer the google home device, now i do almost everything on amazon alexa/echo. much better product and customer support.
01-15-2024 07:15 AM
Does your Alexa control Google Nest? If so, I'm starting to think it's time to switch over to it all too.
01-15-2024 07:17 AM
Yes nest products have matter support now and can be controlled with Alexa. I've been think of switching to that ecosystem my self
01-15-2024 07:26 AM
Thank you. I used to love Google products. But the functionality being taken away not just with the Nest but with other products like Cync, Amysen, Smartlife, etc... are just beyond. And with the lack of response and help is insult to injury.
Looks like I'm going to start switching over to Amazon/Alexa products.
01-15-2024 07:30 AM
yes, i enabled the google nest skill and added the nest devices to my amazon echo account!

Hi everyone,
Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for your patience. I've made the appropriate teams aware of the issues controlling the Nest Thermostat with the Amazon Alexa speakers. Hang tight. We'll be sharing updates here as soon as we have them.
Best regards,
Mark

It's not the Amazon speakers we're having issues with! It's our Google Home and Google Home Mini's that are not working to change the temperature of our Nest Thermostats.

Hi otrueman,
Whoops! I'm sorry for the confusion, and thanks for flagging this. In the meantime, if you come across other information you'd like to pass along or have further questions, feel free to reply and let us know. Also, I'm bumping into these additional details I need to know for the investigation.
Thanks,
Mark

who does mark joseph (i still think he is a bot) work for. AI taking over the world? no if its this ineffective! software version doesn't matter. we are all having the same problem. when i called google support and got the runaround for hours, the final outcome in email was "buy a new Nest thermostat". great solution....
01-16-2024 11:31 AM
Right before he replied with that response I flagged him for not getting the information correct and he auto responded with that.

Hello there,
We understand that in the age of advanced technology, it can sometimes feel like you're interacting with robots, but rest assured, we are real people here at Google Nest Community. Let's jump into the topic and provide us with the details we need above.
Best regards,
Mark

You have been provided with the details in an earlier reply to which you never responded

I am having the same exact issue. Any fix yet?
09-29-2023 12:01 AM
Hello sbehnken,
I'm sorry to hear you're also having the same experience of being unable to control your thermostat via the Google Assistant. To confirm, what's the make and model of the phone you're using? Are you using the Google Assistant app to control your thermostat or a Google Home/Nest speaker? Can you share with us any steps you have tried so far?
Keep me posted.
Regards,
Mark

Yes, I am using the app to control the thermometer as voice command no longer works. I have tried all of the steps mentioned above. (I have reset, removed, factory reset, and re-installed both the home speaker and the Nest Thermostat.) I had already tried all of these steps even before finding this page. They are all on the same wifi. As a former developer, I understand the steps needed to take to troubleshoot these kinds of issues. The connection between the devices is not the issue as people from all across the States are clearly stating that they have the same problem. At this point it leads to the fact that it was probably a Google update that messed things up. Saying that it is any other problem at this point is kind of moot. And creating a routine is not the answer as the temperature fluctuates. The point is that I would like to be able to talk to my Nest to change the temperature like it used to do. Especially in the middle of the night when the lights are off. I don't want to have to turn on my phone and have a bright screen in my eyes. Will there be an update fix to this at any point?

I’m having the same issue. I have 2 nest thermostats…. One works and one doesn’t. Just started within the past week or so. Haven’t changed any settings. Tried restarting the thermostat already. Pretty frustrating
11-10-2023 04:01 PM
I am also having the same issue. Started two weeks ago.
11-13-2023 07:41 PM
Hi folks,
I'm sorry for the delay in response, and thanks for providing more details. To sum up, please share with us these versions:
I'll look forward to your response.

My device is a IPhone 13 Pro Max
Nest Thermostat Gen 3 or 4
Hardware 1.4 and Software 1.3 Latest Update
The problem lies in the Google Assistant itself. While check the out the Google Assistant App (not Google Home App) you can click on your name icon in the top right and go to device manage by assistant. You will see all the devices that Google Assistant can control and the nest thermostat is not there. You cannot add it or even give it the prompt to add the device with works with Google. That’s where the problem lies where assistant is not available to communicate with the NestThermostat.
01-12-2024 11:00 AM
Okay so what's the fix for this then?
01-12-2024 11:03 AM
Hey Markjosephp, can you respond to sbehnken below based on the details they provided? My variables are almost identical, so I'd like to see what solution is provided them, so I can try it too.
12-03-2023 06:15 AM
Same problem here, only mine just started about 2 weeks ago. It’s really frustrating and I feel like it’s just google secretly cutting features. I can’t do mad libs either and few other control options disappear
12-03-2023 10:58 AM
I am also having this issue with the Nest Thermostat (the one that works on Google home, not the learning or E models).
12-07-2023 03:59 AM
I sure would like to hear the "fix" on this one.
My Google Nest stop listening to me last week!
12-23-2023 07:11 PM
I am also having this issue. I'm assuming that's why they are selling this model for 1 dollar after rebate on their website?
01-02-2024 12:17 AM
Exact same issues
01-11-2024 04:35 PM
We installed the Nest Thermostat on Dec. 26 and were able to use the Google assistant to change the temperature until suddenly this week, she says that the thermostat doesn't support that functionality. We are extremely disappointed.
