What is the length of the built in delay on nest thermostat?

What is the length of the maintenance cycle or delay? My AC repairman says Nest thermostats are dangerous to compressors and has replaced some that have been ruined for not having a long enough delay. My Trane system (8 yrs old) does not have a built in delay. Can I lengthen the delay on the nest? I’m told It should be no less than 5 min

Hi there Dmbenat,

Thanks for reaching out to our community.

The Nest thermostat maintenance band functions in a unique way. Don't worry, Here's the breakdown:

The delay built into the Nest thermostat is primarily designed to prevent excessive short cycling. It's a few degrees, meaning the system won't turn on until the current temperature deviates by that amount from the temperature you set.

The heating maintenance band is 0.7°F (0.4°C) above and below the target temperature.
The cooling maintenance band is 1°F (0.6°C) above and below the target temperature.

So, the delay will be present until the temperature deviates within these ranges. These values aren't currently adjustable.

You can find more information about this in this article about the  Nest Thermostat maintenance band.

Let me know how it goes.

Regards,
Angel.
