auxilary heat issues

My wife had our grandson  install a gen 3 thermostat. now when the auxilary heat comes on from our heat pump there is a burning smell and the smoke alarm goes off so I  flip the breakers off to be safe

Clearly something is not right.  Stay safe! A home fire is not worth a new thermostat. Keep the HVAC system off until this is worked out.  Also, consider going back to the old thermostat if necessary. 

To solve this, post a picture of the wiring for your old thermostat as well a picture of the wiring block for you new Nest Learning Thermostat.

Had the the system completely checked out yesterday and it was given the green light. No issues found. He made a change to the nest thermostat of when the auxiliary heat will kick on but said that is just a preference for each individual. Hoping that it was just a big dust bunny burning off seeing that the dryer is next to it. Thanks
