"Actually thermostat doesn't support that functionality"

I am unsure if this a thermostat issue or a Google Home/Assistant issue.

I used to be able to tell any of my google home/assistants (nest audio/mini, Pixel phone) to take actions with the Nest Thermostat (change temp, run fan, etc) and it worked fine. The past 6 months it does not work If i speak to any home/assistant devices they all tell me, "Actually thermostat doesn't support that functionality."

If I use the Home app on my Pixel phone it works just fine. But speaking...forget it.

I have the same issue now.  GH will tell me what the temperature is, but I cannot tell it to adjust the thermostat anymore.  I am still able to control the thermostat through the GH app, though.

Google support was a complete waste of time.  No help at all.

I’m getting very tired of all the bugs with Google Home.  Seriously considering moving away entirely from Google.

I removed the nest thermostat from Google Home and then did a factory reset on the thermostat. I then reinstalled and the issue was resolved.

Hello folks,

I wanted to ensure that everything was covered here.

I'm sorry to hear that you're all having issues controlling your Nest Thermostats using your Google Home or Nest devices. I understand that this can be frustrating, but I see that resetting the Nest Thermostat helped @Sparky96 have full control.

@Nuc and @ARacette67, How's it going with your Nest thermostats? Please try resetting them as well, and keep me posted if that works.

Regards,
Mark

It's not worth doing all that..... I'll move to a different assistant

Mark, what is the next step to fix this?

My apologies on never replying. No. No amount of resetting anything worked.

Sweet that it worked for you. For me it did not. Multiple times.

I had to delete my entire home (after factory resetting nest thermostat), then create and add a new home, and add all my devices back in.  It was an extremely tedious and frustrating process, but the only solution for me.  BTW - even though I deleted GH and some other devices and essentially started over, some of the ghost google home groups that I have never been able to delete still repopulated in my new home I created.

For such a technological conglomerate and pioneer in much of the tech space, Google has many antiquated processes, slow fixes, permanent bugs, and precipitously becoming less revered.

Seems like a huge process to have to reset and delete home, which has dozens of devices to fix something that was previously working.  Specially since these are google thermostats.

Has anyone found another work around ? whole house reset ? really ?

I figured out that my nest was on a different Wi-Fi than my mini.  Put them on the same network and it works fine now.

this worked for me

Check if you have a schedule set for your thermostats (set to certain degree at a certain time) and if it's on custom. That's what happened to mine. When it's on custom Google Home couldn't change the temperature via voice. Once I changed it back to comfort it worked like before. Hope this helps.

this FIXED it!  i had custom setup for certain times, certain days and it up and stopped working.  i cleared them all out.  Now Voice commands work again!

I'll give this a try but if this in fact is the case Google forked up shiat once again. This used to work flawlessly.

There is absolutely no reason voice commands should not work when custom programs are set.

Today is 8/15/23 - and I'm having the same problem.  I've completely removed my Thermostat, re-added.  same result.  Re-started it, same problem.  Very Frustrating, as voice command USED to work.

FIX:  if you have setup "custom" Temperatures, this for some reason disables voice commands to your Thermostat.  Delete them.   Modify the Temperature Presets:  Comfort, Eco, Sleep.  you can change the time & temps on those and voice will continue to work.
