"Starting Soon" for cooling after changing Nest batteries

Hi all - been reading on previous threads to see what was done, but couldn't find much so posting.

A few days ago, our Nest thermostat was showing a low battery indication, and finally got to changing the batteries today. I don't think I noticed it before changing the batteries, but after swapping the batteries out and reinserting the unit, I set the thermostat to cool. I started to notice that there was a "Starting Soon" message with a countdown every few mins after the AC turned on and then the AC would shut off. I didn't notice this error previously, prior to changing out the batteries.

After going through the threads on here, I switched out the air filter, did a factory reset on the device, and even reset the batteries, all to little avail as it seems like it's still happening. I'm not sure why, and was wondering if anyone had any ideas as to why this might be happening, and if you've experienced it, what the root cause issue was?

Many thanks!

Hi @troubleshot009,

Thanks for reaching out to the community! I understand your frustration with the thermostat constantly showing 'Starting Soon' for cooling. It's great that you've already tried troubleshooting steps like changing the batteries, resetting the thermostat, and replacing the air filter.

Here are a few additional steps you can try to diagnose the issue:

  • Check the wire voltage: Ensure the voltage reaching the thermostat matches the manufacturer's specifications (usually indicated in the manual or on the thermostat itself).
  • Verify the serial number filter. Make sure the filter selected in the thermostat settings matches the actual filter installed in your HVAC system.
  • Change the battery type. Confirm the batteries are brand Energizer Ultimate Lithium; if not, you can please replace them with 2 standard 1.5 V AAA. Energizer Ultimate Lithium.
  • Clean the thermostat terminals: Use a soft, dry cloth to gently clean the battery terminals and the corresponding contacts on the thermostat base. (Note: Power off the thermostat before cleaning.)
  • Check for error codes: After a factory reset, some thermostats display error codes that can help pinpoint the problem. (If applicable to the specific model)

Please follow the instructions above and keep me updated on what the results are.

Regards,

Jorge.
