5th Nest Camera RUINS connection! Please help!

Ok bit of a head a scratcher here so I appreciate any help.  I'm trying to get a total of 7 cameras all powered continuously, 2 Indoor Nest Gen2 and 5 Outdoor Battery Cams New Gen2 as well, all with offical Google power cords.  I had originally the Google Nest Wifi Gen2 mesh with 1 point.  My cable modem is set for Gigablast with 1000Mbps download / 50Mbps upload.  My setup is Netgear Cable Modem (no routing function) -> Netgear Orbi Pro 6 Router -> Google Nest Wifi Router Mesh with 1 Point.  The Orbi Router has 4 built in VLANs and I have the Nest Router on it's own VLAN separate from anything else plugged into my Orbi.  I ONLY connect Google Nest products to the Nest Wifi Mesh.

It "works" just fine like that IF AND ONLY IF only 4 cameras (doesn't matter which type) are connected.  I also have a few other things like the Nest Audio and a Display.  Speed and mesh tests are all good...consistently 700Mbps/27Mbps to 900Mbps/33Mbps downloads and uploads.  As soon as I connect a 5th camera the streaming on all 4 cameras goes from perfect and live feed to continuous fall offs and disconnects.  I then did about 100 different reconfigurations: you name it I did it.  Bought 2 extra Google Nest Wifi Routers.  Did wired backhaul, did 3 wireless mesh, 2 and point, different VLANs, etc.  ALWAYS same problem....once a 5th camera hits the Google Nest network the cameras lose solid connectivity.  The ONLY solution I found was to create a separate Home and load a separate Google Nest Wifi Router on that "Home" and hook those cameras to that network.  So I had 2 Nest networks off same Orbi/Cable modem signal and 8 cameras live streamed fine as long as they were on separate Nest networks.

The math just doesn't make sense...according to Google the MAX upload of each camera would be 3Mpbs and each Nest network was speed testing 27-33Mbps.  So theoretically 1 Nest router should be able to handle 8 cameras.  The only conclusion I can draw is each network can only "handle" 4 cameras at a time flawlessly.

Anybody have the answer to this riddle?

I have no idea what causes it. Could be NAT problems. Spanning tree protocol. Any managed switches in this "mess"? I call it mess because of how you're mixing multiple routers from different vendors in here. 🙂

Why do you double NAT on purpose? Nest Wifi is a NAT router with firewall by default.

Have you tried without the Netgear? Or with just the Netgear (no Nest Wifi in regular mode) and some additional access point(s)?

Nest Wifi can be set up as an access point only, but that requires you to bridge it. Which makes mesh not work. And you can only have one bridged Nest Wifi per Google Home home.

Thanks for the reply.  Sorry just saw this.  Ya, I'm at a loss why it does that but as soon as a 5th camera is added it disrupts the connection in all of this.  To answer your question, no there are no switches in any of it.  To answer your second question, I've tried every single imaginable configuration.  I decided I will just have to live with it or wait for a new generation of Nest wifi to come out with Wifi6.

I do have one follow up question...concerning the Guest Wifi.  Is there anyway to do client isolation with the Google Home app?  I know you can deny access to Google devices linked to the main network but I want ZERO backdoor access to any of my Main network devices.

Client isolation is not a thing with Nest Wifi at all unfortunately. I asked the same thing years ago. 😕 IMO, a guest network should have it by default.

Hi, mattnest99.

What olavrb said is correct, client isolation isn't a feature with Nest WiFi. I can definitely see why you would make use of the feature and I'll be happy to pass your suggestion along to our teams that it's a feature you would like to see added to the product line in the future. If you have any other questions, please let me know.

Thanks.

Hi mattnest99.

I just wanted to follow up one more time to see if there's anything else you might need or if you're all sorted out for now.

Thanks.
