Can’t Connect Nest Node to WiFi

Brian933
Community Member

Hi, I added a Nest router to my AT&T internet. AT&T changed the router settings to bypass mode. Google router is working fine. I’ve

added the first Nest node and the system picked it up but it won’t connect to WiFi. I’ve tried all the tips in Help but one: when I enter the password for the node, which password? My existing AT&T password, or my new Google network password? Not sure if this is the issue, but nothing else in the Help section has worked. Thanks in advance for any guidance.

Hi Brian933,

Thanks for posting. What you need to put is the setup key of your Nest Wifi point. The setup key is located on the bottom of the point you're trying to set up. You can also review this article for the complete steps. Feel free to reply in case a specific step is confusing for you, we'll be here to help out.

Best,
Abi

Abi,

Thanks and I did that but I get the same result: can't connect to WiFi. WiFi is working fine throughout the house, our phones, the Google router, etc. I read the article and tried all the suggestions on the Help page in the Google Home app. This mesh network was set up in my previous house and worked fine. We obviously have a new network in this new house. Any chance the previous set up might somehow be conflicting with what I'm trying to do? No idea what to do next.

 Thanks,

Brian

Hey Brian933,

You’ll need to set up your network again since your AT&T modem router was reconfigured. Give these steps a try:

Power cycle your modem by unplugging your modem’s power for 2 minutes. Plug the power back in and wait until it's online. Don't connect your Nest Wifi router yet.
Factory reset your Nest Wifi router and points.
Set up your network from scratch. You may use the same SSID and password that you had before so you won’t have to reconnect your devices again.

Let us know how it goes.

Abi,

i haven’t tried yet. We have guests for a few days and I don’t want to risk messing up my WiFi by mistake and making enemies among my kids. I’ll try early next week. Really appreciate the help and follow-up.

Hi Brian933,

Thanks for the update. We'll keep this thread open for a few days to give you time to do the troubleshooting steps. Let us know if you have any other questions or clarifications for now.

Abi

Abi,

That worked. The router and point are working. One more question: I have a 2nd point; if I add that further away from the router than the first point, will the first one extend the connection? I'm trying to get a good connection in my detached garage. The first point is now in the back room of the house. Will that relay the connection if I add the 2nd point in the garage? Hope that's clear. Thanks again for your help...much appreciated.

Hey Brian933,

Thanks for the update! I’m happy to hear that it’s working now. Regarding your 2nd Nest Wifi point, you’ll need to set it up near the main Nest Wifi router first as it needs to connect to it during setup. Then, you can move it away. We suggest a distance of at least 20-25 feet from the main Nest Wifi router.

You may still place it farther than what is suggested but there is a possibility of a weaker connection in that specific point. It’s all a matter of placement as each home is different. If you have thick walls or appliances that can cause interference like a baby monitor or a microwave, you’ll have to avoid placing them near those areas. For more details, you can read through this helpful article.

Let me know once you’ve set up the 2nd Nest Wifi point. If you encounter any issues, feel free to reply to this thread and we’ll continue to help you out.

Thanks,
Abi

Abi,

No further help needed. Goal accomplished: I have a strong WiFi signal reaching my detached garage, and have another Nest point available if needed. You can close this and many thanks for your help.
