Computer cannot connect to wireless Printer

oracion
Community Member

Hi,

I'm using ATT fiber which connects to a Switch which connects to a Google Nest H2D.  I've already enabled passthrough on the ATT router and the Nest Wifi is working fine.  However my computer (hard-wired to the Switch) is unable to connect to the wireless printer.  Other wireless devices (such as my phone) can print without any issue.  Any help would be appreciated!

Thank you!

That's because your computer, and any other device you've hardwired directly to the switch, will be get an IP address from your ATT fiber router. All your other devices, including your printer, will get an IP address from your Nest Wifi router. Routers issue IP addresses in what are known as subnets (think of this as an IP address range), and they will be using different subnets to do that, which is why your computer cannot communicate with your printer, or any other device you have connected behind Google Nest Wifi for that matter.

The easiest and simplest way to fix this is to connect your ATT fiber router directly to the WAN port on your Nest Wifi router. Connect your switch to the LAN port on your Nest Wifi router. Then all your devices, wired or wireless, will be behind your Nest Wifi router and will be able to communicate with each other.

Modem → ATT router → Nest Wifi router → Switch → Computer

Alternatively, a more complicated way to fix this is to check the settings on each router and change the LAN DHCP settings on one or the other so they are set to use the same subnet. If you do this, make sure you reserve out the IP address used by your Nest Wifi router (and any points) to prevent those IPs being issued by your ATT router in error.
