Hey,
I wanted to connect one of my pucks to the main puck via Ethernet to get a better connection, but it never shows “wired” in the app.
I have my main puck connected to my modem via Ethernet in the WAN port. I then have another Ethernet cable connected to the main puck LAN port - I have tried connected that other end to the second pick WAN and LAN port, but it never shows wired and the speed stays about the same.
Is it possible to connect them this way, or do I need to add a switch in between?

Hello @Aquesada001
It is absolutely possible to connect them this way, and many people have (including me, though I have a switched network in between rather than direct). It should work using either the WAN or LAN port on the secondary puck connected to the LAN port on the primary. If that isn't working, I'd focus on making sure that Ethernet cable is working properly. Try testing it out using a shorter, known-good cat 5e cable with them in the same room first. You might also try putting something else on the end of that cable (like a laptop – anything with an Ethernet port) and ensure it can get a connection.

Hey Michael,
Thanks for the suggestions!
Just ran some of your tests, here is what I found:
Am I supposed to change any setting in the app to tell it to use ethernet instead of mesh?

Hello @Aquesada001
It sounds like the cable is good. The test with a short cable near the primary is interesting, as that should have worked for both secondaries you tried. There aren't any settings changes required to make this work – you just plug the cable in and within a few seconds, it should show as "wired" as the connection type for that secondary in the Google Home app.

Hmm - does the app still show Wired, or maybe it doesn't any longer?
I read some posts from other people who said it used to show wired for them, but now only shows mesh.

Both of my wired secondary units show "Connection type: Wired" in the Device settings screen in the Google Home app.

I have a total of 6 pucks throughout my house, including my main point. I was only going to run an ethernet to the main puck and, as of now, 1 other puck in the house. The rest are just impossible to get ethernet to.
Could that be the problem? Are they supposed to all be on ethernet, or all be on mesh?
11-08-2022 06:38 AM
6 pucks would be a lot of pucks for a single system. I believe 5 is the limit, and even that is more than most people should have. There's a single 5GHz channel used by all of them, so having a lot of them doesn't necessarily help, and it can end up making things worse. The nodes will select a path through the mesh that provides the fewest hops to the destination (for internet traffic, that is going to be the primary node – the one connected to your internet service). So, if a node can get through to the primary at all it will do that rather than going through another node that might be in between. Since WiFi will slow way down if necessary, most systems end up with star topologies. So, you want to place the primary in the center of your home and then place mesh secondaries no more than one or two rooms away from there. A wired secondary can be farther away, since it isn't using the mesh interconnect. People have even placed them in outbuildings.
All of that said, it is possible to build a system with a mixture of wired and mesh secondaries. Just be aware that a wired secondary will not be part of the mesh, so it can't act like a "base station" for a more distant mesh-only secondary. So, mesh secondaries will need to be placed according to the best placement advice (described above).

Hey, my system still does not show wired. I also removed one puck to bring my total to 5, it still does not show.

Hi Aquesada001,
Could you check if the speed tests varies if you're hardwired and not?
Best,
Mel

Hey, I ran the test you suggested - the speed was about the same whether I had the Ethernet connected or not.
11-21-2022 09:29 AM
Hi Aquesada001,
Thanks for confirming that. Could you also confirm if the speed test is the same when your laptop is connected to your main point and access point through an Ethernet cable?
Thanks,
Mel

Hey, can you explain a little more?
So connected my laptop using ethernet to:
Is that correct?
If so, I will get that done today when home.

Hi Aquesada001,
Yes, that's right,
Keep us posted.

Hey,
So I ran these tests and it does look like the ethernet connection is working. Here are the results when I connected my laptop directly to each puck using ethernet, then ran a speed test:
Main Puck:
871 Download
38 Upload
Secondary Puck WITH Ethernet Connected To The Main Puck
818 Download
38 Upload
Secondary Puck WITHOUT Ethernet Connected To The Main Puck
234 Download
40 Upload
So, does it seem like directly connecting the ethernet is working, even if it does not show it in the app?
Thanks

Hey Aquesada001,
Can you check the MAC address in the Google Home app and compare it to the actual MAC address of your device? Let us know if it’s the same one.
Cheers,
Abi

Hey, can you tell me how to do that?
11-28-2022 10:38 AM
Hello Aquesada001,
Here are the steps to check your device's MAC address from your Google Home app:
Open the Google Home app.
Tap Wi-Fi.
At the top, tap Devices.
Tap a specific device and a tab to find additional details.
Speed: Real time usage is how much data your device is currently using. Usage is how much data the device has used over the selected time frame.
Info: Device details like connection status, IP address, and MAC address.
More details here. Let me know if you have any questions.
Regards,
Abi

Hey, it says I have to turn on cloud services to see devices. Should I turn that on? Will that allow me to see the mac address?
11-28-2022 12:15 PM
Hi Aquesada001,
Yes, you can. Let me know how it goes.

Abi
