Does it need to be connected to the phone jack around the areas we place them?

Connect the nest to main router. All the other phone jacks are standard size jacks.

Sorry I want to confirm, are you asking about the Google or Nest Wifi Mesh system? If so, no , only the main point needs to be connected to the modem, the other two points can be wireless.
